University of Louisville Constructs Engineering Facility
The University of Louisville is constructing a $90 million facility to provide the J.B. Speed School of Engineering with dynamic environments for hands-on learning and discovery. Designed by Luckett & Farley and SmithGroup, the 114,000-sf structure will accommodate laboratories, classrooms, a maker space, design studios, and event venues. The four-story development will drive the growth of Kentucky’s technology-enabled economy by offering collaboration venues for shared exploration with industry partners.
Agratas Creates Battery Gigafactory
Agratas, a subsidiary of Tata Group, will break ground in spring of 2024 on a £4 billion battery factory in the United Kingdom. Located on the Gravity Smart Campus in Bridgwater, the three-building complex will leverage highly efficient processes and technologies to produce advanced battery cells for electric vehicles. The sustainable project involves the adaptive reuse of an existing brownfield site and the creation of sophisticated renewable energy systems.
U.S. Geological Survey Begins Construction on Energy and Minerals Research Facility
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began construction in September of 2023 on the $240 million Energy and Minerals Research Facility in Golden, Colo. Sited on the campus of the Colorado School of Mines, the 190,000-sf building will enable 250 USGS researchers to work side-by-side with 68 of the university's investigators and 150 students. This collaborative nexus for applied geosciences will include state-of-the-art laboratories, faculty offices, graduate student workstations, a classroom, and a café.
University of North Dakota Plans Advanced Materials Facility
The University of North Dakota is planning to construct the Materials Exploration and Advanced Materials Processing Facility (MatEx) in Grand Forks. Designed by Stantec and ICON Architectural Group, the 28,000-sf facility will enable the expansion of innovative programs in biomass processing, critical minerals production and processing, and the creation of advanced carbon-based materials.
Vancouver Community College Plans Centre for Clean Energy and Automotive Innovation
Vancouver Community College is planning to construct the CAD$291.3 million Centre for Clean Energy and Automotive Innovation on its Broadway campus in Vancouver, British Columbia. Designed by Stantec, the 343,832-sf facility will empower students to participate in the clean energy economy with technology-rich teaching labs, flexible classrooms, and specialized venues for collaborative education.
