AK Steel Constructs Research and Innovation Center

AK Steel will break ground in mid-2015 on the $36 million Research and Innovation Center in Middletown, Ohio. The 120,000-sf facility will house R&D laboratories, applications engineering suites, pilot lines for the simulation of manufacturing operations, and customer support areas.

Purdue University Plans Indiana Advanced Manufacturing Research Center

Purdue University is planning to build the $50 million Indiana Advanced Manufacturing Research Center in West Lafayette, Ind. Located in the Purdue Research Park, the 62,000-sf facility will support the creation of advanced composite materials and will feature production simulation and 3D printing technologies. The center is supported by funding from the Department of Energy and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation and will provide leasable space for industry partners. Occupancy is expected in 2016.

Brookhaven National Lab Dedicates National Synchrotron Light Source II

Brookhaven National Laboratory celebrated the dedication of the $912 million National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) in February of 2015 in Upton, N.Y. The 627,000-sf facility houses a medium-energy electron storage ring that can produce the brightest X-ray light in the world as well as ultraviolet and infrared light. The NSL-II will support multidisciplinary research in advanced materials, nanotechnology, condensed matter, materials physics, chemistry, and biology.

University of Central Florida Partners with Osceola County on Advanced Manufacturing Research Center

The University of Central Florida is partnering with Osceola County and the Florida High Tech Corridor Council to create the $72 million Florida Advanced Manufacturing Research Center in Kissimmee. Housing the world’s first industry-led smart sensor consortium, the 100,000-sf research and incubation facility will be leased and operated by the University of Central Florida. The construction manager for the project is Skanska USA.

Inova Health Plans Biomedical Research Campus

Inova Health is acquiring a 117-acre campus in Merrifield, Va., as the site for a new biomedical research complex called the Center for Personalized Health. The first phase of construction will create the Inova Translational Medicine Institute and the Inova Comprehensive Cancer and Research Institute. The $200 million, 180,000-sf project is slated for occupancy by early 2018. Existing facilities on the campus will be renovated to provide advanced laboratory space for collaborative genomics research.
