Georgia Tech Research Institute Completes Cobb County Research Facility South

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) celebrated the opening of the Cobb County Research Facility South in May of 2019. Located in Smyrna on land purchased from Lockheed Martin, the 350,000-sf campus houses the Aerospace, Transportation, and Advanced Systems Laboratory (ATAS); the Cybersecurity, Information Protection, and Hardware Evaluation Research Laboratory (CIPHER); the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS); and the Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory (SEAL).

University of Maryland Opens Iribe Center for Computer Science and Engineering

The University of Maryland opened the $152 million Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science and Engineering in April of 2019 in College Park. Housing the Department of Computer Science and the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, the six-story, 215,600-sf facility will support groundbreaking research and education programs in artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, robotics, data science, cybersecurity, quantum computing, and virtual and augmented reality.

Abaco Systems Constructs Engineering Design Center

Abaco Systems is building a 40,000-sf engineering design center in Huntsville, Ala. Located in the Redstone Gateway development, the project will enable space in the company's' existing Memorial Parkway facility to accommodate expanded systems integration, assembly, and testing operations. Completion is expected in September of 2019. Headquartered in Huntsville, Abaco Systems is a global leader in open-architecture computing and electronic systems for aerospace, defense, and industrial applications.

San Jose State University Breaks Ground on Interdisciplinary Science Building

San Jose State University broke ground in April of 2019 on the $181 million Interdisciplinary Science Building in San José, Calif. Designed by Flad Architects with Research Facilities Design (RFD) as laboratory design consultant, the eight-story, 161,200-sf facility will provide state-of-the-art teaching and research labs, flexible learning environments, collaboration hubs, and administrative offices.

University of Toronto Plans Schwartz Reisman Innovation Centre

The University of Toronto is planning to create Canada's largest university-based innovation node with the construction of the 750,000-sf Schwartz Reisman Innovation Centre. Funded in part by a $100 million donation, the interdisciplinary center will feature vertical gardens, soaring atria, and integrated collaboration areas, as well as offering leasable space for startup companies.
