University of Minnesota Builds Cancer and Cardiovascular Research Facility

The University of Minnesota began construction in May of 2011 on a $200 million cancer and cardiovascular research facility in Minneapolis. The 280,000-sf building is expected to reach completion in spring of 2013. Housing biomedical and genomics research laboratories with advanced instrumentation, the project is part of the second phase of the Biomedical Discovery District. The facility was designed by ZGF Architects of Seattle and Architectural Alliance of Minneapolis.

St. Michael's Hospital Completes Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute

St. Michael's Hospital celebrated completion of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute in May of 2011 in Toronto. Designed by Diamond+Schmitt Architects, the $100 million translational research facility houses the Keenan Research Centre with three floors of open wet labs and two floors of dry labs. The nine-story building also includes the Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre and an auditorium. The Institute was built by Eastern Construction Co. and is connected to St. Michael's Hospital by a pedestrian bridge.

Cardiff University Constructs Hadyn Ellis Building

Cardiff University began construction in May of 2011 on the 107,640-sf Hadyn Ellis Building in Cardiff, Wales. Designed by Nightingale Associates, the $32.5 million facility will support post-graduate medical research with laboratories, clinics, lecture halls, and offices. The project team includes general contractor BAM Construction, structural engineer BDP, and mechanical/electrical engineer Aecom. BREEAM Excellent sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.

Purdue University Plans Seng-Liang Wang Hall

Purdue University is planning to construct the 147,000-sf Seng-Liang Wang Hall in West Lafayette, Ind. Housing laboratories and classrooms for the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the four-story mixed-use development will include academic, research, and retail space. Completion is expected in spring of 2013.

USDA Breaks Ground on Insect Nursery

The U.S. Department of Agriculture broke ground on an insect nursery in May of 2011 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Located at the Agricultural Research Service's Invasive Plant Research Laboratory, the $16.7 million annex will be used to breed insects used as biocontrols for invasive plant species. Construction will begin in July of 2011 with completion expected in September of 2012.
