University of Edinburgh Completes Roslin Institute

The University of Edinburgh completed the new Roslin Institute in March of 2011. The $97 million project houses animal health research and education facilities including the Scottish Agricultural College and the Royal Veterinary School. Designed by HDR Architecture, the building reflects the shape of a chromosome with strands of offices interwoven with strands of laboratories, connected by conference rooms and interaction spaces. The new Roslin Institute includes a 250-seat auditorium, a library, and a freezer archive.

University of Plymouth Breaks Ground on Marine and Maritime Research Building

The University of Plymouth broke ground on a £38 million marine and maritime research building in March of 2011. Housing an advanced wave tank suite and a ship simulator, the facility will support research and development of marine energy and maritime industry technologies. The general contractor for the project is the Leadbitter Group.

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre Plans Building Complex

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre is planning to develop a $25 million horticultural research complex in Vineland Station, Ontario. Designed by Diamond + Schmitt Architects of Toronto, the project will include construction of a 28,000-sf laboratory and renovation of existing facilities. Construction is expected to begin in 2012.

Site Work Begins for UK Centre for Medical Research & Innovation

Site work will begin in April of 2011 on the $808 million UK Centre for Medical Research & Innovation (UKCMRI) in London. The 10-story, 850,000-sf facility was designed by HOK in collaboration with PLP Architecture. The general contractor is Laing O’Rourke. The building will house 1,250 researchers and 1,500 staff. Completion is expected in mid-2013 with occupancy expected in 2015. UKCMRI represents a partnership of Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, The Wellcome Trust, and University College London.

Eastern Michigan University Opens Science Building Addition

Eastern Michigan University's new $90 million, energy-efficient addition to and renovation of the Mark Jefferson Science Building is a green design and construction project pursuing LEED silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Designed by Lord, Aeck & Sargent's Ann Arbor, Mich., office, the building features a planetarium/classroom, a green roof, a rain garden, and employs stormwater management and daylighting. Phase 1 of the project, an 80,000-sf addition, was completed in December of 2010.
