BD Attains LEED Silver for Diagnostics Facility

Medical technology company BD was awarded LEED Silver sustainable design certification in December of 2010 for the $14 million BD Diagnostics – Women’s Health and Cancer facility. Located in Mebane, N.C., the 101,000-sf building features advanced lighting and HVAC systems and low emission interior finishes. The facility opened in May of 2010 and is expected to use 25 percent less energy than a comparable conventional structure.

UCB Expands Microbial Manufacturing Facilities

UCB is investing EU250 million to expand its facilities in Bulle, Switzerland. A microbial manufacturing unit will be built to produce a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease. The expansion is slated for completion in 2015. UCB is also constructing a bioprocessing pilot plant in Belgium.

Indiana University South Bend Renovates Biology Labs

Indiana University South Bend will renovate existing research space in Northside Hall to create the Integrative Biology Research Facility. The $773,000 project will provide a greenhouse and labs for general research, microscopy, molecular biology, microbial culture, and data analysis. The existing greenhouse will expand from 700 sf to 1,460 sf and 1,550 sf of lab space will be renovated. The project is supported by $604 million in federal stimulus funding. Construction will begin in spring of 2011.

International Center for Aviation Excellence Plans R&D Complex

The International Center for Aviation Excellence is planning to create a research and development complex in Hamilton Township, N.J. The project will be developed on the former Atlantic City Race Course site. A conceptual plan for the project was created by Environetics, LWDMR Architects, and SOSH Architects. The 400,000-sf facility will include a 250-room hotel, offices, and research space.
