Sanofi-aventis Opens Arizona Research Center

Sanofi-aventis opened the $60 million Tucson Research Center in Oro Valley, Ariz., in January of 2010. Housing up to 105 researchers engaged in early stage drug development, the 110,350-sf facility was designed by KlingStubbins with DPR Construction as general contractor. Construction began on the project in fall of 2007. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the laboratory facility, which uses 21.5 percent less energy than a comparable building.

FBI and Department of Defense Construct Biometrics Technology Center

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Defense will construct the $328 million Biometrics Technology Center in Clarksburg, W.V. Located at the FBI’s existing Criminal Justice Information Services campus, the four-story, 360,000-sf facility will support the research, development, and application of biometrics in support of national security and law enforcement. The center will enable the FBI to consolidate its biometrics operations in a single location and will house approximately 2,000 employees. Completion is expected in 2013.

University of South Florida Builds Teaching and Research Facility

The University of South Florida will begin construction in early 2010 on a $55 million interdisciplinary teaching and research facility in Tampa. Completion is expected in August of 2011. The 72,600-sf facility will house teaching and research laboratories for biology, chemistry, physics, and nanotechnology. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the project.

UC Berkeley Plans Helios Energy Research Facility West

The University of California, Berkeley will break ground in June of 2010 on the 113,000-gsf Helios Research Facility West in downtown Berkeley. The 64,000-nsf project will house wet laboratories for molecular and microbial biology, fermentation, and chemical separation, as well as greenhouses, warm and cold rooms, shared instrumentation space, offices, workrooms, and conference space. Accommodating biofuels research and development, the Helios facility will house the BP-funded Energy Biosciences Institute.
