NASA Opens LEED Gold Flight Projects Center

NASA officially opened the 190,000-sf Flight Project Center at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., in October of 2009. Designed by LPA, the six-story facility attained LEED Gold sustainable design certification. The Flight Project Center provides design and development space for missions and includes a 400-seat auditorium, conference rooms, flexible work stations, and a basement. The project team included general contractor Swinerton Builders and Vanir Construction Management.

EMD Serono Expands Billerica Facilities

EMD Serono is engaged in a $65 million expansion of its research campus in Billerica, Mass. The 140,000-sf facility will house laboratories for pharmaceutical research and production, including 25,000-sf of chemistry and screening labs and 25,000-sf of biology and cell culture labs. The building will also house offices, conference rooms, and an auditorium. Construction began on the project in fall of 2008 and completion is expected in late 2010. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.

Gold Coast University Hospital Constructs Academic Medical Center

Gold Coast University Hospital is building a $1.76 billion academic medical center in the Molendinar area of Gold Coast City in Queensland. The 10-story, 750-bed teaching and research hospital will be comprised of two towers providing a total of 750 beds. The sustainably designed facility is being constructed by Bovis Lend Lease. Ground was broken for the project in February of 2009 with completion slated for December of 2012. The hospital will provide facilities for radiotherapy, neurosciences, labor and delivery, surgery, emergency, and trauma care.

University of Louisville Opens Clinical and Translational Research Building

The University of Louisville opened the 300,000-sf Clinical and Translational Research Building in October of 2009. Located on the university's health sciences campus in downtown Louisville, the $143.1 million project was designed by Arrasmith, Judd, Rapp, Chovan of Louisville and SmithGroup of Detroit with Messer Construction of Cincinnati as general contractor. Ground was broken for the facility in February of 2006.

University of Florida Plans Academic and Research Center

The University of Florida is planning to construct the $61 million Academic and Research Center in the Lake Nona biomedical district in Orlando. The four-story, 115,000-sf facility will house the Comprehensive Drug Development Center; the UF College of Pharmacy doctoral program, and biomedical research laboratories. Designed to foster collaboration with the adjacent Burnham Institute for Medical Research, the Academic and Research Center will support accelerated development of medical treatments through translational research.
