Laboratorios Hipra Plans Ames Vaccine Facility

Animal health company Laboratorios Hipra is planning to build a vaccine production laboratory in Ames, Iowa. Located in the Iowa State University Research Park, the facility will act as Laboratorios Hipra’s U.S. headquarters. Construction on the 100,000-sf project will begin in 2011 with production commencing in early 2013.

Toxikon Expands Bedford Vivarium

Preclinical contract research organization Toxikon is engaged in an expansion of its corporate headquarters in Bedford, Mass. The 12,000-sf project will provide additional vivarium and animal research space, including facilities for surgery, imaging, and monitoring of both small and large animals. The facility will support remote visualization of procedures to maximize research collaboration.

University of Winnipeg Opens Science Complex and Richardson College for the Environment

The University of Winnipeg opened the 155,000-sf Science Complex and Richardson College for the Environment in June of 2011. The $67 million project features 30 research and teaching labs, classrooms, offices, a vivarium, a digital media lab, and a rooftop greenhouse. The facility houses the departments of biology, chemistry, and environmental studies. LEED certification will be sought for the building, which includes a four-story atrium with nine living trees. Ground was broken on the project in November of 2008.

University of Edinburgh Completes Roslin Institute

The University of Edinburgh opened the $97 million Roslin Institute in June of 2011. Designed by HDR Architecture, the center houses animal health research and education facilities including the Scottish Agricultural College and the Royal Veterinary School. The building reflects the shape of a chromosome with strands of offices interwoven with strands of laboratories, connected by conference rooms and interaction spaces. The facility includes a 250-seat auditorium, a library, and a freezer archive.

North Dakota State University Dedicates Beef Cattle Research Complex

North Dakota State University dedicated the Beef Cattle Research Complex in June of 2011. Supporting research in animal nutrition and physiology, genetics, and food safety, the $3.3 million center includes accommodation for 192 cattle, a feed mixing and storing facility, a laboratory, and office space.

Aviagen Opens Veterinary Laboratory

Aviagen opened a 15,000-sf veterinary diagnostic and research facility in June of 2011 in Elkmont, Ala. The BSL-2 facility will provide laboratory space for genomics, serology, bacteriology, pathology, tissue sample processing, and molecular diagnostics. The secure facility is an authorized National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) Laboratory and includes dedicated ventilation systems in exam rooms to prevent cross-contamination. Stanford University Plans Satellite Research Animal Facility

Stanford University is planning to construct the $27.5 million Satellite Research Animal Facility in Palo Alto, Calif. The single-story, prefabricated building is slated for completion in December of 2012. The facility will eventually be replaced by a permanent structure. Additionally, Stanford University is planning to build the $41.2 million, 22,100-sf Research Computing facility. Construction will begin on the two-story project in early 2012 with completion expected in 2013.

Virginia Tech Develops Research Vivarium

Virginia Tech will begin construction in summer of 2011 on 26,000 sf of shell space located on the third floor of the Carilion Research Institute in Roanoke. The $15 million project will create a 5,000-cage vivarium, laboratories, and research offices. Completion is expected in September of 2012.

University of Kentucky Completes Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory Expansion

The University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory celebrated the completion of a $28.5 million expansion and renovation project in May of 2011. The 76,000-sf building includes research and diagnosis labs, a 3,000-sf necropsy suite, and administrative offices. The biocontainment facility features alkaline digestion for tissue disposal. Ground was broken on the project in September of 2008.

USDA Breaks Ground on Insect Nursery

The U.S. Department of Agriculture broke ground on an insect nursery in May of 2011 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Located at the Agricultural Research Service's Invasive Plant Research Laboratory, the $16.7 million annex will be used to breed insects used as biocontrols for invasive plant species. Construction will begin in July of 2011 with completion expected in September of 2012.

Formerly occupied by Wyeth, the six-building site will provide laboratories, offices, security, and warehouse space. The main three-story facility is 42,100 sf. Wickham Laboratories is a contract research organization based in Wickham, U.K.

Tarleton State University Opens Southwest Regional Dairy Center

Tarleton State University opened the $11.2 million Southwest Regional Dairy Center in May of 2011. The teaching and research facility is located in Stephenville, Texas, and houses 300 cows. The center will promote collaborative industry partnerships for the development of sustainable dairy practices. A planned second phase will include a bottling facility and a creamery.

UC Davis Breaks Ground on Veterinary Research Building

The University of California, Davis broke ground on the $58.5 million Veterinary Medicine Research Facility 3B on April 29, 2011. The four-story, 76,000-sf facility will support interdisciplinary research on human, animal, and environmental health issues. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the project. Completion is expected in December of 2012.

Spring Valley Laboratories Opens Animal Research Surgical Suite

Spring Valley Laboratories opened its advanced surgical center for animal research in April of 2011 in Woodbine, Md. Located in a GLP-compliant facility, the surgical suite includes a dual station operating room, designated animal prep and recovery areas, a dark room, and a four-station necropsy suite. Spring Valley Laboratories is a contract research organization. The Woodbine facility provides indoor specific pathogen free (SPF) barrier animal housing for small and large animal models.

North Carolina State University Dedicates Companion Animal Veterinary Medical Center

North Carolina State University will dedicate the $72 million Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Veterinary Medical Center in Raleigh in May of 2011. Doubling the size of the Small Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital, the 110,000-sf addition will house exam rooms, surgery suites, teaching space, and a pharmacy. The facility will support veterinary training and animal care with advanced imaging technologies, a linear accelerator, and copper-shielded rooms for neurological and opthalmological diagnostics.
