Orlando Utilities Commission Constructs New Headquarters

The Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) has selected Skanska USA Building in partnership with JCB Construction as construction managers of the new 127,000 OUC Headquarters Building. The $40 million project is scheduled to reach completion in September 2008. Hunton Brady and Baker Barrios are the project architects. The new facility is being developed as an energy-conscious, LEED-accredited facility that will replace the existing 40-year-old facility.

DHL Expands Hong Kong Facilities

DHL is constructing the $35-million Kowloon South Service Centre in Hong Kong. The facility will house relocated administrative offices and will increase ground-handling capacity by approximately 20 percent. DHL will also open the $210-million Central Asia SuperHub at Hong Kong International Airport by the second quarter of 2007 for a ground handling capacity of 45,000 shipments per day, as well as boosting air express cargo handling capabilities.

Qualcomm Completes San Diego Campus

Qualcomm has completed the 909,170-sf Building W Campus in San Diego. The three-building project was designed by Delawie Wilkes Rodrigues Barker and built by general contractor Roel Construction with Burkett & Wong as structural engineer and Walsh Engineers as mechanical engineer.

Brooklyn Navy Yard Builds Sustainably Designed High Bay Space

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation broke ground in fall of 2006 on a multi-tenant industrial building designed by Vollmer Associates. The project represents the first phase of an expansion program that will add 400,000 sf of new industrial space to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Six new buildings are planned for development over the next three years. The new three-story building at Perry Street will provide approximately 89,000 sf of space for industrial companies.

Fidelity Investments Expands Smithfield Campus

Fidelity Investments recently broke ground in fall of 2006 on a new 569,000-sf facility in Smithfield, Rhode Island, which will be the largest office building in the state. Gilbane Building Co. has been selected to serve as construction manager for the project. The new $200-million facility, the third building to be constructed by Gilbane on Fidelity’s Smithfield campus, will be home to Fidelity’s Pyramis Global Advisors group and Fidelity Personal Investments. Accompanying the office building is a 2,500-car multi-level parking structure.

The State Compensation Insurance Fund Develops New California Campuses

The State Compensation Insurance Fund, headquartered in San Francisco, is building two new campuses in Vacaville and Pleasanton, Calif. A 430,000-sf office complex on 33 acres in Vacaville's Vaca Valley Business Park will accommodate over 1,200 employees in five two-story buildings comprising a total of 434,375-sf. The project will be developed in three phases. Phase one will broke ground in late 2006 and will reach completion on three buildings by late 2008. Phase two will begin in 2009 and conclude in 2011.

NCR Corp. Reduces Worldwide Facilties Costs

Retail technology company NCR Corp. has cut $78 million annually from its worldwide facilities operating budget by reducing leases and selling under-utilized properties. By implementing electronic technology for mobile employees, NCR has been able to reduce the need for office space, cut operating costs, and consolidate workers. Last year, NCR sold 49 acres to the University of Dayton. Over five years, NCR has reduced its leased and owned properties from approximately 800 to 300 facilities and will continue to evaluate its needs.

Intuit Builds San Diego Headquarters

Intuit Inc. is constructing its new $146-million regional headquarters in San Diego. The site of the 465,000-sf campus was determined by calculating employee commute times to select a central location. Upon completion, the four-building project will house office space, a 492,000-sf parking structure, and a 15,000-sf fitness center. Gemini Science Inc. (GSI) and La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology (LIAI) completed a new 145,000-sf collaborative research facility in La Jolla, Calif., in July of 2006. Located in the UC San Diego Science Research Park, the facility was designed by Delawie Wilkes Rodrigues Barker and built by DPR Construction.

Fluor Dedicates New Irving Headquarters

Fluor Corporation dedicated its new global headquarters in Irving, Texas, on June 5, 2006. Housing approximately 180 employees, the 140,000-sf, three-story, dual-wing facility was constructed on a 26-acre property located in the Las Colinas business district. Featuring a commercial kitchen and dining area, employee fitness center, 100-seat auditorium, meeting rooms, a three-story glass-enclosed atrium, and a two-story parking facility, the building was designed and built to meet LEED™ sustainability criteria.

Manpower Builds New World Headquarters

Manpower has selected Gilbane Building Company as construction manager for its new 280,000-sf world headquarters facility in downtown Milwaukee. The $50-million project includes the headquarters building, the extension of the Milwaukee RiverWalk, and a 1,260-stall, seven-story parking structure conneceted to the building via a skywalk.

San Francisco State University Plans Digital Arts Campus

San Francisco State University (SFSU) is in the early planning stages for a state-of-the-art new media and digital cinema campus to be housed in an existing 320,000-sf structure at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, a 500-acre shipyard redevelopment project led by developer Lennar Corp. Phase One of the redevelopment is under construction with completion in late 2007. The digital arts campus would be part of Phase Two, an 80-acre development focused on industry and job creation providing approximately 2 million sf of R&D and office space.

BBC Awards FM Contract to Johnson Controls

Johnson Controls has won a new contract to provide facilities management services to the BBC's property portfolio in London and Scotland. The five-year contract will cover 129 premises and 700,000 square meters (7,532,000 sf) of workspace. Johnson Controls will also provide specialist services across the BBC's wider UK property portfolio. Johnson Controls created a custom-made technological solution for the BBC which addresses its critical broadcast continuity and customer service requirements.
