Discovery Communications has plans to house 2,000 employees at a $150 million, 500,000-sf global headquarters to be built on four acres in Silver Spring. Gensler is the strategic planning/interior design architect for the project. The Smith Cos. will design the base building. The general contractor is Clark Construction.

Capital One Consolidates in Tysons Corner

Capital One Financial, based in Falls Church, Va., has plans to consolidate five regional offices at a new corporate campus in Tysons Corner in Northern Virginia. The 28-acre site will accommodate 700 employees in 2002, when the facility is scheduled for completion.

New Building for Office of Student Financial Assistance

General Services Administration (GSA) is planning a new $35 million, 215,000-sf facility in Washington for the Office of Student Financial Assistance, a Department of Education division. Groundbreaking is scheduled for May 2000, with occupancy anticipated by October 2001. Greenbaum & Rose of Washington is the developer for the project. The general contractor is  Centex Construction of Fairfax, Va.

Nortel Expands in Alpharetta

Nortel Networks Corp. plans to build twin 180,000-sf structures at its Windward campus in Alpharetta to accommodate its fiber-optic equipment business. Barry Real Estate Cos. of Atlanta will develop the facilities that will eventually accommodate approximately 1,500 employees. Construction on the first building began in April, with completion anticipated in twelve months.

KLA-Tencor to Build in Livermore

KLA-Tencor Corp., based in San Jose, Calif., will expand with a six-building, 720,000-sf campus at the Cayetano Business Park in North Livermore. The campus will house offices, an engineering division, and an advanced manufacturing complex with clean-rooms. The first building is scheduled for completion in June 2001. The 120,000-sf structure will accommodate approximately 400 employees. KLA, a semiconductor tool manufacturer, will retain its headquarters in San Jose.

Dell Computer Corp., based in Round Rock, Texas, is building a 300,000-sf computer manufacturing plant and a 300,000-sf facility for the company's sales and tech support operations at a site near Nashville International Airport. Completion is anticipated in summer 2000.

Tivoli Plans New Campus in Austin

Tivoli Systems Inc. plans to consolidate its 2,000 employees currently located in 10 Austin offices at a new 90-acre corporate campus. Tivoli has awarded the contract for the project's master plan to the Houston office of Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum (HOK). At build-out, the campus will feature more than one million sf of office space.

New Voice of America Facility Under Construction

Voice of America (VOA) began construction of a new 30,000-sf state-of-the-art multimedia broadcast center designed by Gensler. An observation walkway will allow the public to watch the broadcaster's 175 journalists at work. A visitor center, visitor exhibits, and a retail shop are also included in the project. VOA is working to have the new facility ready to cover the November presidential elections for its foreign audiences.

FDA Plans Consolidation

US Food and Drug Administration's Phase II consolidation includes a new headquarters at the 700-acre site of the former Naval Surface Warfare Center in Montgomery County, Md. Pending approval of an advance $101,239,000 appropriation in the fiscal 2001 budget, construction would begin in fall 2000 on the new 111,250-sf Center for Drug Evaluation and Research Laboratories. The design for a new lab and office for the Center for Devices and Radiological Health would be included in the appropriation as well.

Novartis Institute Construction Begins

Novartis Institute for Functional Genomics is under construction at the company's new 16-acre West Coast campus in San Diego. Phased construction is planned with a December 2001 completion date. The six-building research facility will accommodate 350,000 sf of lab and office space. The architect for the project is NBBJ, San Francisco, Architecture Design Planning. San Diego's DPR Construction Inc. is the builder.

Paradigm Builds in Research Triangle Park

Paradigm Genetics Inc. opened in March a new 20,000-sf Gene-Function Factory at their $25 million Center for Functional Genomics Research in RTP. The building houses six plant growth rooms with indirect lighting, as well as labs and offices. A second 50,000-sf structure is under construction with completion anticipated in fall 2000. It accommodates growth rooms, labs, offices, and a natural-light greenhouse. A 32,000-sf third building is scheduled to open in October 2000.

Cisco Systems Continues Baystate Expansion

Cisco Systems Inc., based in San Jose, Calif., is considering the purchase of an additional 56-acre parcel in Boxborough where the company currently proposes building 1.8 million sf of office and research space at three sites that total 580 acres. The additional 56 acres would provide room for another 240,000-sf office facility for a total of more than two million sf in the area. Total costs are estimated at more than $200 million.
