X Corp Solutions Opens Quantico Cyber Hub

Defense contractor X Corp Solutions opened the $10 million Quantico Cyber Hub in September of 2019 in Stafford, Va. The three-story, 30,000-sf facility provides state-of-the-art classrooms for cybersecurity education and training programs. The building also accommodates a certified national testing center, workshops, a cyber café, collaboration areas, administrative offices, and innovation space for the American Cyber League.

Air Force Research Laboratory Constructs Open Innovation Campus

The Air Force Research Laboratory will break ground in fall of 2019 on the $12 million Open Innovation Campus in Rome, N.Y. Located at Griffiss International Airport, the facility is being constructed in partnership with SUNY Polytechnic Institute, The Griffiss Institute, and Oneida County. The project includes the renovation of a three-story, 40,000-sf building to create leading-edge research space for the study of artificial intelligence and quantum information science.

Raytheon Plans Advanced Manufacturing Facility

Raytheon is planning to build a 200,000-sf advanced manufacturing facility in McKinney, Texas. Supporting Raytheon's Space and Airborne Systems division, the center will act as a 'factory of the future' for the production of sensors, high-energy lasers, electro-optical devices, and surveillance and reconnaissance systems. Completion is expected in late 2020. Raytheon is a technology and innovation company specializing in defense, civil government, and cybersecurity solutions.

The U.S. Air Force broke ground in June of 2019 on the $12.8 million Space Control Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. The 26,000-sf facility will enable the Air Force Research Laboratory to consolidate operations currently sited in six disparate locations at the site.

Located in the Redstone Gateway development, the project will enable space in the company's' existing Memorial Parkway facility to accommodate expanded systems integration, assembly, and testing operations. Completion is expected in September of 2019. Headquartered in Huntsville, Abaco Systems is a global leader in open-architecture computing and electronic systems for aerospace, defense, and industrial applications.

Lockheed Martin Opens Research & Development II Facility

Lockheed Martin opened the $50 million Research & Development II facility in Orlando in February of 2019. The six-story, 255,000-sf building offers collaborative offices and laboratories to support engineering, program management, and business operations for the company's Missiles and Fire Control division as well as the Rotary and Mission Systems division. The duration of construction was one year.

LAVLE USA Plans Marine Electric Propulsion Simulation Lab

LAVLE USA is partnering with Old Dominion University to create the $12 million Marine Electric Propulsion Simulation (MEPS) Laboratory in Newport News, Va. Supporting both military and commercial applications, the 22,000-sf facility will house sophisticated instrumentation for the development of electric propulsion, advanced energy storage, and autonomous systems technologies. Construction is expected to begin in summer of 2019 with completion in summer of 2020.

Blue Origin Plans Rocket Engine Manufacturing Plant

Blue Origin will break ground in late 2018 on a $200 million manufacturing facility in Huntsville, Ala. Located in the Cummings Research Park, the project will produce the BE-V engine, a critical component of the United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan rocket. This technology will enable the United States to have independent access to the International Space Station. The 200,000-sf facility will accommodate up to 342 employees. Other tenants of the Cummings Research Park include NASA, Aerojet Rocketdyne, Boeing, and Radiance Technologies.

NASA Constructs Research Support Building

NASA Glenn Research Center will begin construction in fall of 2018 on the Research Support Building in Cleveland. Walsh Construction Company has been awarded a $32.7 million contract to build the two-story, 64,000-sf facility, which will provide collaborative engineering suites, open and private offices, conference rooms, training areas, and dining amenities for approximately 164 employees.

Boeing Sites Aerospace and Autonomy Center at MIT's Kendall Square Development

Boeing will lease approximately 100,000 sf of research space to house the Aerospace and Autonomy Center in Cambridge, Mass. Part of MIT's Kendall Square Initiative project, the facility will be located on four floors of a 17-story, 400,000-sf building currently under construction at 314 Main Street. Occupancy is expected in late 2020. The $2 billion Kendall Square Initiative includes the development of six sites to provide research space, offices, housing, retail, and academic facilities.

Radiance Technologies Builds Huntsville Headquarters to Support Defense Partnerships

Located in Cummings Research Park West, the 100,000-sf facility will support the growth of business partnerships with the Department of Defense, NASA, and national intelligence organizations. Designed by Fuqua and Partners, the project will provide secure high bay space, a variety of classified and unclassified labs, and a 200-seat conference center. Completion is expected in late summer of 2019.

Designed by CannonDesign to foster collaboration with industry partners, the 245,000-sf facility will house UAlbany’s College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity; the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences; the Atmospheric Sciences Research Center; and the New York State Mesonet, the nation’s most advanced weather-detection system.
