The 11-story, 820,000-sf Advanced Health Sciences Pavilion (AHSP) integrates world-class patient care, medical research, and teaching in a highly collaborative environment. Designed to bridge the gap between discovery and patient care, this new facility—home of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, neurosciences programs, and stem cell research—puts research labs in close proximity to clinical settings, so physician-scientists can transform medical care at Cedars-Sinai.

Byron Central Hospital completed the construction of its new $65 million facility in Ewingsdale, Australia, in March of 2016. The three-story, 101,000-sf hospital was designed by Nettleton Tribe and provides an emergency department, inpatient rooms, outpatient clinics, a maternity center, a chemotherapy suite, a dental clinic, and a mental health facility. General contractor Brookfield Multiplex began construction on the project in October of 2014.

Case Western Reserve University is partnering with the Cleveland Clinic to build the $515 million Health Education Campus in Cleveland. Designed by Foster + Partners of London, the four-story, 487,000-sf facility will provide technology-rich classrooms, simulation labs, and auditorium space for interdisciplinary medical education programs. Ground was broken on the project in October of 2015 with completion expected by summer of 2019.

The University of Texas Medical Branch dedicated the $438 million Jennie Sealy Hospital in Galveston in February of 2016. Housing 310 private inpatient rooms, the 12-story tower provides 20 operating rooms, including a neurosurgery suite with an integrated MRI. The hospital also accommodates a 54-bed ICU and a 28-bed outpatient surgery unit. Construction began on the project in April of 2012.

James Cook University is planning to build a private hospital in Townsville, Queensland, to complement the clinical training and research activities of the College of Medicine. Slated for completion in 2019, the first phase of construction will create a 100-bed facility at a cost of AU$113 million. A planned second construction phase could double the size of the facility, as well as providing medical offices adjacent to the hospital.

The National Veterinary Research Institute has completed commissioning the Bio-Safety Level III Laboratory in Vom, Nigeria. The $2.5 million facility will enhance the Institute's ability to detect, diagnose, and respond to infectious diseases throughout West Africa. The duration of construction for the project, which was created in partnership with the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, was three years.

Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center broke ground in February of 2016 on a $230 million children's hospital in Baton Rouge. Providing advanced pediatric care and research facilities, the six-story, 350,000-sf project will include an emergency department, laboratories, surgical suites, inpatient rooms, and a dedicated hematology and oncology unit. An adjacent four-story, 95,000-sf medical office building will offer clinical space for pediatric medical specialties. Completion is expected in late 2018.
 

Novartis and the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine celebrated the opening of the $27 million Center for Advanced Cellular Therapeutics in February of 2016 in Philadelphia. Accommodating the production of personalized cancer treatments using chimeric antigen receptor technology, the 30,000-sf facility features 23,610 sf of laboratory and cell therapy manufacturing space as well as a 6,300-sf cleanroom.

The University of East Anglia began site work in February of 2016 on the $140 million Quadram Institute, a new biomedical research facility located in the Norwich Research Park in the United Kingdom. Housing the Institute of Food Research, the multidisciplinary project is being created in partnership with Norwich University Hospital and will accommodate the study of gut flora in the human microbiome, healthy aging, and food innovation and safety.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center is building the $323 million Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center in Omaha. The project includes construction of a 10-story, 252,000-sf research tower with 98 laboratories, as well as a seven-story, 325,000-sf treatment facility with 108 inpatient beds and a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic. The center is being created in association with The Nebraska Medical Center. Construction began on the public-private project in May of 2013 and completion is expected in spring of 2017.

The UWM Innovation Accelerator, funded in part by a federal economic development grant as the first building in a planned Innovation Park, is a public-private partnership that collocates business, industry, and academic research to launch intellectual property. The two-story building is sited to leverage the technology available in nearby institutions, such as the Milwaukee County Medical Complex, Children’s Hospital, and the Medical College of Wisconsin, and to attract researchers, faculty, students, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and investors.

HCA Holdings is building the $109 million Oviedo Medical Center in Oviedo, Fla. Sited on 48 acres, the 198,000-sf project includes a 64-bed acute-care hospital, a 40,000-sf medical office building, and a freestanding emergency department. Designed by Gould Turner Group, Oviedo Medical Center will provide a full range of healthcare services including intensive care, cardiology, surgery, primary care, orthopedics, and labor and delivery. Occupancy is expected in early 2017.

Lexington Medical Center will begin construction in early summer of 2016 on an eight-story, 545,000-sf tower on its hospital campus in West Columbia, S.C. Designed by Perkins+Will, the $430 million expansion will accommodate 176 new inpatient beds as well as space for critical care, intensive care, surgery, and labor and delivery. The project will include renovation of existing hospital facilities as well as construction of a parking garage and a medical office building. Completion is expected in late 2018.

The 12-story McGlothlin Medical Education Center at Virginia Commonwealth University, completed in 2013, facilitates a new model of collaborative, team-based learning. The C3 curriculum—centered on the needs of the learner, clinically driven, and using competencies as outcomes—reflects a two-year process of reinventing the first and second years of medical school (M1-M2) involving the dean, faculty, executive-level curriculum staff, and students.

Auburn University began construction in February of 2016 on two new health science facilities in Auburn, Ala. Designed to support advanced instruction in team-based healthcare, the $29 million School of Nursing will feature simulation labs, active learning classrooms, and spacious interdisciplinary teaching labs. The three-story, 89,000-sf building will also provide research space, faculty offices, conference rooms, a tiered auditorium, and a student lounge.
