The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) awarded $267 million for the construction of 12 stem cell research facilities on May 7, 2008. Supported by institutional and philanthropic financing, a total of $832 million in stem cell research facilities will be constructed in California.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison broke ground on the $150 million Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery in Madison on May 2, 2008. The 300,000-sf interdisciplinary biomedical research building will be comprised of four stories above ground and one below, and will house research offices, an atrium, and flexible dry, wet, and combination laboratories. The collaborative public-private research project will accommodate biotechnology, health science, nanotechnology, engineering, and stem cell research.
Genzyme Corp. is planning to construct a new 200,000-sf R&D center in the Zhongguancun Life Science Park in Beijing. The $90 million facility will accommodate research and development in areas including orthopedics, transplant and immune disease, oncology, endocrinology, and cardiovascular disease, as well as laboratory-scale operations for the MACI(R) (matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation) cell therapy and polyclonal antibody operations.
The University of Central Florida (UCF) is constructing the Burnett Biomedical Sciences building in Orlando. Slated for completion by fall of 2009, the five-story facility will will house the merged UCF College of Medicine and the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences. The project team includes Ellenzweig Associates of Cambridge as design architect and HuntonBrady Architects of Orlando as architect of record.
Louisiana State University will break ground in summer of 2008 on a $28 million clinical research facility. The four-floor, 90,000-sf facility will be part of the 600,000-sf Pennington Biomedical Research Center sited on 237 acres in Baton Rouge. Upon completion of the clinical research building, construction will commence on a $12 million imaging center and a $50 million renovation of the existing clinical facility.
Michigan State University broke ground on the $90 million Secchia Center in Grand Rapids in April of 2008. Housing MSU’s College of Human Medicine, the project will support medical education and biomedical research in the areas of cancer, obesity, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and neurobiology. The 180,000-sf, seven-story facility will include teaching laboratories, classrooms, offices, and student areas. The Secchia Center is slated for occupancy in fall of 2010.
Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science broke ground on the $43 million Life Sciences Research and Nursing Education Building in Los Angeles on April 18, 2008. The two-story, 63,000-sf building will house comprehensive nursing instruction for the Mervyn S. Dymally School of Nursing, and biomedical and clinical research laboratories for the College of Medicine and the College of Science and Health. Completion is expected by fall 2009. The architectural firm for project is HOK.
Developer JTC Corp. broke ground in April of 2008 on the $100 million Biopolis III building in Singapore. The 41,500-sm facility will consist of two buildings accommodating biomedical research and incubator space. Completion is slated for the fourth quarter of 2009. Crescendas Bionix will occupy at least 50 percent of the facility. A construction start date for the 30,000-sm Biopolis IV has yet to be announced. Biopolis, a biomedical research and development park, is located at One-North in Buona Vista.
SUNY Upstate Medical University is planning $300 million in improvements to its Syracuse, N.Y. campus. Funded by $320 million from the state of New York, the university will initiate a $72 million expansion of the Institute for Human Performance, creating needed research laboratories and constructing an 85,000-sf addition. A $150 million project will build new heart and cancer centers and modernize inpatient rooms at University Hospital.
Sanofi Pasteur broke ground in April of 2008 on a $100 million vaccine research and development facility in Toronto. The project cost for the 15,000-sm building includes $80 million for construction and $20 million for equipment. Completion is slated for 2010.
The Coriell Institute for Medical Research will begin construction in April of 2008 on a $6 million renovation of its genetic research facility in Camden, N.J. The project will include renovation of 21,500-sf on the second and third floors of the five-story building and $50,000 of improvements to cell culture laboratories on the fourth floor. The duration of construction is estimated at 18 months.
The University of Rochester has received $50 million from the State of New York’s Upstate Revitalization Fund to construct the Clinical and Translational Science Institute. The 150,000-sf facility will house labs and offices for the development and commercialization of medical research.
The $60 million HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology will officially open in the Cummings Research Park in Huntsville, Ala. in April of 2008. Housing 12 for-profit companies and 900 employees, the facility will support Alabama’s high tech, biotech, and clinical research industries to address a variety of diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative diseases. Designed by Cooper Carry, the 270,000-sf project is the cornerstone of the 150-acre CRP Biotech Campus.
The University of Maryland, Baltimore received $62 million from the state of Maryland in April of 2008 to construct an addition to the School of Pharmacy. The seven-story facility will house four floors of clinical and translational research in pharmacogenetics, nanomedicine, and drug discovery. Featuring technology-rich lecture halls and a patient interaction laboratory, the 92,635-sf project will connect to the existing Pharmacy Hall via a glass pavilion.
Johns Hopkins University opened the John G. Rangos Sr. Life Sciences Building in East Baltimore, Md., on April 11, 2008. The University will occupy 100,000-sf of lab and office space in the 278,000-sf facility. The $60 million, seven-story building will provide interdisciplinary research space for the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences in the areas of epigenetics, sensory biology, cell dynamics, and metabolism and obesity research.
