Queen's University Constructs Medical School

Queen’s University will open its $77 million medical school in September of 2011 in Kingston, Ontario. The building features a three-story glass atrium providing abundant natural light. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the advanced teaching and learning facility. The building will house integrated science labs, simulation suites, lecture halls, classrooms, small group learning areas, and administrative offices.

Saint Martin's University Plans Engineering Building

Saint Martin's University will begin construction in summer of 2011 on a $7 million engineering building in Lacey, Wash. Designed by McGranahan Architects of Tacoma, the 21,000-sf facility will act as a teaching tool as well as providing classrooms and labs. LEED Platinum sustainable design certification will be sought for the building, which will include a geothermal heating system and a rooftop photovoltaic array. Completion is expected in fall of 2012.

Purdue University Dedicates Ideas to Innovation Lab

Purdue University dedicated the $1.5 million Lyles Family Ideas to Innovation Laboratory in April of 2011. Located in the Civil Engineering Building on the Purdue campus in West Lafayette, Ind., the facility will support an advanced pedagogy of integrated instruction, experimentation, and computer simulation. The flexible space can be divided into four specialized areas and includes student workstations for simulation of experiments. The laboratory features a glass wall for public display of teaching and research.

Rice University Dedicates Brockman Hall for Physics

Rice University dedicated the $44.5 million Brockman Hall for Physics in March of 2011. Construction began on the 111,000-sf facility in fall of 2009. The project was supported by $11 million in stimulus funding from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The four-story building houses advanced laboratories for experimental, theoretical, and applied physics.

University of Alaska Fairbanks Constructs Life Sciences Building

The University of Alaska Fairbanks broke ground on the $108.6 million Life Sciences Building on March 30, 2011. The 101,000-sf teaching and research facility will house advanced laboratories, offices, classrooms, and an auditorium. Davis Constructors and Engineers provided design consultation services for the project. Completion is expected in 2014.

Purdue University Breaks Ground on Center for High Performance Buildings

Purdue University broke ground on a $23.5 million facility for the Center for High Performance Buildings on April 1, 2011. The 68,000-sf project represents an expansion of the existing Ray W. Herrick Laboratories. Construction of the first phase will begin in July of 2011 and reach completion in early 2013. The project is supported by $11.75 million in funding from the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

University of Wisconsin-Madison's Education Building Receives Energy Star Rating

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has received an Energy Star rating for its renovation and expansion of the historic Education Building. Designed to attain LEED Platinum certification, the project sets a new standard of sustainability with an active chilled beam system and abundant natural light. The project was designed by HGA Architects in collaboration with historic preservation consultant Quinn Evans Architects.

University of Nottingham Plans Energy Technologies Building

The University of Nottingham has awarded Clegg Construction a $10.3 million contract to build the Energy Technologies Building. The project team includes architect Maber, structural engineer Price & Myers, and mechanical and electrical engineer Aecom. Located in Innovation Park, the 26,910-sf project will include laboratories, offices, a prototype hall, an exhibition area, and a user facility for energy testing.

Colorado State University broke ground on the $64 million Engineering II facility in Fort Collins in March of 2011. The 122,000-sf building will house laboratories arranged in research pods for maximum collaboration between students and faculty. The facility will provide space for the College of Engineering and a 24-hour study atrium. Occupancy is expected in fall of 2013.

Nova Southeastern University Breaks Ground on Coral Reef Research Center

Nova Southeastern University broke ground in March of 2011 on the $30 million Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Ecosystem Science Research Facility. The five-story, 86,000-sf project will double the footprint of the existing NSU Oceanographic Center in Fort Lauderdale. Completion is expected in December of 2011. The project team includes architectural firms Cannon Design and ACA and design-build contractor Moss Miller. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.

The four-story, 65,000-sf facility will provide classrooms, offices, and an atrium for the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development. The project team includes architectural firm SHW Group, architect of record Bergmann Associates, and LeChase Construction. Occupancy is expected in January of 2013.
