University of West Indies Expands Medical School

The University of the West Indies is planning to build a $3 billion complex for its Faculty of Medical Sciences in Mona, Jamaica. Construction will begin in the first quarter of 2009. The facility will house five large lecture halls, teaching and research laboratories, computer labs, and a library for the departments of anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology, and physiology.

University of Texas at Dallas Breaks Ground on MSET

The University of Texas at Dallas broke ground in October of 2008 on the $29 million Math, Science, and Engineering Teaching-Learning Center (MSET). Slated for completion in 2010, the undergraduate instructional facility will house lecture halls, classrooms, and teaching laboratories for chemistry, physics, biology, and geosciences. The 76,000-gsf facility (45,000-asf) was designed by Kell Muñoz Architects.

MIT Constructs Media Lab Expansion

MIT is building a 160,000-sf expansion of its Media Lab in Cambridge, Mass. The new extension is known as Building E14 and is slated to open in October of 2009. Designed by Maki and Associates of Tokyo, the six-story facility will house seven research laboratories, administrative offices, conference rooms, a 100-seat theater, and a two-level atrium.

Stanford University Breaks Ground on Lokey Stem Cell Research Building

Stanford University School of Medicine broke ground on the $200 million Lorry I. Lokey Stem Cell Research Building on October 27, 2008 in Stanford, Calif. The 200,000-sf facility is scheduled to open in summer of 2010 and will be the largest stem cell research facility in the United States. Housing the Stanford Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine Institute, the building will feature an open design to encourage collaboration with a large atrium connecting two research wings.

University of Wisconsin Completes Institute for Influenza Viral Research

The University of Wisconsin-Madison completed the $12.5 million Institute for Influenza Viral Research in October of 2008. Located in the University Research Park in Madison, the 30,000-sf BSL-3 facility accommodates flu vaccine research for the School of Veterinary Medicine. The design-build contractor was ACS of Madison, Wis.

Fort Valley State University Breaks Ground on Science Building

Fort Valley State University broke ground on a $20 million science center in October of 2008 in Fort Valley, Ga. Slated for completion in fall of 2009, the 59,000-sf building will house seven biology teaching labs, five chemistry labs, a geology lab, and a physics lab. The project will also provide faculty research labs, an 80-seat auditorium, and four classrooms.

CDC Plans Second Construction Phase at Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases Lab

The Centers for Disease Control will initiate construction in January of 2009 on the second phase of the Division of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases facility in Fort Collins, Colo. The first 165,000-sf phase, representing 80 percent of the completed project, broke ground in August of 2004 and reached completion in May of 2007. Phase two is comprised of the completion of the fourth floor of the facility and is slated for completion in early 2010.

Utah State University Breaks Ground on USTAR Building

Utah State University broke ground on the Utah Science, Technology and Research (USTAR) building in October of 2008 in North Logan. The $60 million facility will house incubator space as well as USU’s Center for Advanced Nutrition, the Cache County Study on Memory, Health and Aging, and incubator space. The 110,000-sf project will include a a nanofabrication facility, vivarium, laboratories, offices, and a large kitchen. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the building. Completion is slated for early 2011.

Imperial College London Opens Bioengineering Building

Imperial College London opened its £8.4 million bioengineering education and research facility in London in October of 2008. Located on the South Kensington campus, the project will provide research and teaching laboratories, lecture halls, offices, and conference rooms for the Department of Bioengineering.

Indiana University Bloomington Breaks Ground on Field Laboratory

Indiana University Bloomington broke ground on the 6,000-sf Research and Teaching Preserve Field Laboratory on October 20, 2008. Built by Turner Construction, facility will support research in environmental science, geology, and biology. LEED certification will be sought for the sustainably-designed project, which will house wet and dry labs, offices, and conference rooms. Completion is expected in spring of 2009.

University of New England Dedicates Pickus Center for Biomedical Research

The University of New England dedicated the Pickus Center for Biomedical Research and the Cecile Morgane Research Laboratories in October of 2008. Located in Biddeford, Maine, the $6 million, 22,000-sf collaborative research facility includes six laboratories, 12 faculty offices, and two conference rooms. Designed by Einhorn Yaffee Prescott of Boston, the project includes space for a future vivarium. The general contractor was Wright Ryan Construction of Portland.

University of Tennessee Biocontainment Lab Nears Completion

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s $25 million Regional Biocontainment Laboratory is slated for completion in early 2009. Located in the UT-Baptist Research Park in Memphis, the 30,315-gsf (16,250-nsf) project will provide 7,300-sf of BSL-3 research space, 1,257-sf of BSL-2 research space, and 7,695-sf of office and support space. Additionally, UTHSC will initiate construction in the first half of 2009 on a 50,000-sf to 70,000-sf vivarium adjacent to the RBL. Completion is expected in 2010.

Purdue University Plans Seng-Liang Engineering Facility

Purdue University is planning to construct the $18 million Seng-Liang Wang Hall in West Lafayette, Ind. Housing the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the 39,370-sf facility is slated for completion in 2010. The project will include the Robert and Janet Fenwick Very-Large-Scale Integration and Circuit Design Complex, a computational lab, research laboratories, conference rooms, interaction space, and faculty offices. The project will include specialized research laboratories for optics, photonics, circuit design, and computational nanoelectronics.

The University of Oregon is planning to construct the $65 million Robert and Beverly Lewis Integrative Science Building in Eugene. Slated for completion by 2012, the 100,000-sf interdisciplinary research and teaching building will house facilities for neurosciences, life sciences, geosciences, materials and physical sciences, and computational and information sciences. Designed to foster collaboration, the project will include shared analysis facilities, advanced imaging technologies, conference rooms, and classrooms.

Al Fateh University Expands in Libya

Al Fateh University has selected Hill International as construction manager for a $2 billion expansion of its campus in Tripoli, Libya. The project includes 18 million sf of new construction and expansion in 39 buildings, as well infrastructure improvements to existing facilities. Completion is slated for March of 2010.
