San Diego State Completes Fraternity Row

San Diego State University (SDSU) has completed the $14-million Fraternity Row. Designed by San Diego architectural firm M.W. Steele Group Inc., the development consists of a 62-unit apartment complex and eight fraternity houses. Taylor Frager Inc. was the contractor for the project, which opened in time for SDSU's fall classes. Part of the $500-million College Community Redevelopment Project, Fraternity Row was funded by the SDSU Foundation.

UC Irvine Completes Natural Science Unit I

The University of California, Irvine has completed work on the Natural Science Unit I, a four-story, 119,000-sf facility housing laboratory, office, and classroom space for the School of Biological Sciences and the Department of Chemistry. The $54-million design/build facility will open in time for the first quarter of the school year. The building is split into two wings - a laboratory wing and a classroom/office wing. The lab wing is further divided into two large suites in order to promote research interaction among the various scientists.

San Mateo Community College Upgrade Planned

San Mateo County will invest $207 million to upgrade three community college campuses over the next five years. The College of San Mateo will house a new $21-million Science Center designed by tBP Architecture of Concord, Calif. Noll & Tam of Oakland, Calif., will design Canada College's $17-million Library Center. The new $16-million Student and Community Center, designed by KMD of San Francisco, will be built on the Skyline College campus.

UCSF Builds Fresno Medical School

The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) is building a $26-million, 55,000-sf facility in Fresno to accommodate up to 45 students in its UCSF Fresno residency program. Located on the Community Regional Medical Center campus, the three-story building will function as a headquarters, housing the Associate Dean's office, a library, seven residency programs, and an auditorium with videoconferencing capabilities. Groundbreaking for the facility is scheduled for Oct. 22.

UC Riverside Plans Interdisciplinary Studies Building

The Universityof California Riverside has completed the pre-design phase of the new Interdisciplinary Studies Building. The $32-million, 69,397-asf facility will house 13 new general assignment classrooms, dry instructional and research labs, faculty and administrative offices, and support space.

University of Kansas Builds Dole Institue

The University of Kansas is constructing the Dole Institute & Archive facility. Designed by ASAI Architecture of Lenexa, Kansas, the building will house offices, meeting spaces, and exhibits for the Dole Institute for Public Service & Policy, an institution focusing on current policies and public service. The two-story facility will also house Senator Bob Dole's archives, over 3,500 boxes of material, for study and use by University students and the public.

UC Riverside To Build Physical Sciences Facility

Construction is scheduled to start on the University of California Riverside’s Physical Sciences 1 in late 2002. The planned 129,000-gsf (73,000-asf) multidisciplinary chemical sciences facility has a budget of $49,010,000.

 The University of California Riverside has completed the pre-design phase of its new Psychology Building. The $33.7-million, 86,526-gsf  (51,915-asf)  facility will house dry and wet instructional and research labs, faculty and administrative offices, and support for the Department of Psychology.

University of Kansas Develops Learned Hall Addition

The University of Kansas is building a privately funded five- to six-story addition to Learned Hall, enabling consolidation of the School of Engineering's departments and programs in one facility. The addition will feature a new main entrance leading to a media-rich 250-seat lecture classroom/auditorium and administrative offices. Designed by Gould Evans Associates of Lawrence, Kan., the facility will include a 2,000-sf Environmental Engineering and Science Laboratory, 15 new labs, 25 GTA offices and 38 faculty offices.

University of Kansas Plans Second Edwards Campus Building

The University of Kansas is planning to build a second building on the Edwards Campus in Overland Park. Designed by architect Gould Evans Goodman Associates of Overland Park, the facility will house offices, traditional classrooms, tiered high technology classrooms, computer labs, an executive-style boardroom, administrative and faculty offices, a lobby, and a cylindrical 240-seat auditorium. Slated for completion in April of 2004, the project's budget is $17,800,000 with a $14,850,000 construction contract.

The $17.2-million, 44,138-gsf (25,600-asf) facility will house 5 organic chemistry teaching laboratories, 10 multidisciplinary research laboratories with medium to high intensity fume hood requirements, lab support, and academic offices.

The University of California Riverside’s Undergraduate Student Housing Phase 2 is slated for completion in fall of 2002. The $42.8-million, 173,162-gsf (138,530-asf) project consists of eight residence halls with a total of 666 beds. The development also includes facilities for undergraduate student administrative operations.

University of Michigan Builds Life Sciences Institute

The University of Michigan is building the $96-million, 235,000-gsf Life Sciences Institute comprised of six floors and a mechanical penthouse. Part of the of Palmer Drive Development, the facility will house the newly created Life Sciences Institute, established to enhance education, basic research and translational research in the life sciences. The Life Sciences Institute will house 150,000 nsf of wet research labs, lab support, core lab areas, principal investigator offices, interaction spaces, administrative offices, a combined gallery/lobby space, and a small library.

University of Michigan Renovates Dana Building Sustainably

The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor’s $17.7-million, 107,800-gsf Dana Building Phase II Renovation project is under construction. Creating new program facilities on the fourth floor, the renovation also includes new plumbing, heating, cooling, and ventilation systems, with upgrades to electrical and fire protection systems. Most spaces not recently renovated will be renovated in the second phase.
