Research and Development

The University of Chicago will initiate construction on the $215 million William Eckhardt Research Center in September of 2011. The 265,000-sf facility will provide laboratories for astronomy, chemistry, physics, and astrophysics. Supporting advanced nanoscale reseach and development, the seven-story project will house the Institute for Molecular Engineering and will include two floors below ground. The Institute for Molecular Engineering will be operated in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory.

The University of Texas at Arlington completed the $126 million Engineering Research Building in December of 2010. The 234,000-gsf facility houses classrooms, research and teaching labs, a science and engineering library, collaboration space, faculty offices, and space for the departments of biomedical engineering and computer science. The project was designed by Page Southerland Page with RFD (Research Facilities Design) as laboratory design consultant.

College of the Holy Cross attained LEED Gold sustainable design certification for the $64 million Integrated Science Complex in December of 2010. Located in Worcester, Mass., the four-story facility consists of the Park B. and Linda Smith Laboratories, a new four-story building, and the renovated Haberlin Hall. The project includes numerous features that produce an energy savings of more than 52% in cooling and 39% in heating, lowering total energy consumption by more than 31% over industry standard baseline. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) proposed the creation of the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences in December of 2010. The center was recommended by the the Scientific Management Review Board as part of an initiative to streamline the structure of the NIH. The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences will house existing NIH programs including the National Center for Research Resource's Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA).

The University of Wisconsin will begin construction in 2012 on a second research park in Madison. The project will create 4 million sf of laboratory and technology space. The mixed-use development will include residential and retail space in an innovative urban setting.

The University of Alberta will build a $26.5 million stem cell research facility in Edmonton. Supported by $10.6 million in funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the 10,000-sf regenerative medicine laboratory will be located on the seventh floor of the Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Research Innovation. Completion is expected in 2013.

Bayer HealthCare broke ground in December of 2010 on a €35 million biologics production facility in Wuppertal, Germany. The five-story building will house 1,370 sm of cleanroom space on two floors for the production of therapeutics for clinical trails. The facility will also house offices, interaction space, and technology suites. Completion is expected in 2012.

The $32.9 million Wayne T. and Mary T. Hockmeyer Hall was recently constructed at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. The building gives Purdue’s renowned Structural Biology group the space needed to continue to be at the forefront of this field. The 65,690-sf facility includes research laboratories and a BSL-3 suite with embedded electron microscopy.

Nektar Therapeutics opened its new 102,000-sf headquarters in San Francisco's Mission Bay development in December of 2010. The facility will house 150 employees and is sited adjacent to the UCSF Life Sciences and Medical Center. Previously based in San Carlos, Calif., Nektar utilizes an advanced polymer conjugate chemistry technology platform to create novel therapeutics.

Alexandria Real Estate Equities completed the first phase of the Alexandria Center for Life Science in December of 2010. Located in New York City, the life science park is designed as an international hub for scientific, entrepreneurial, and commercial collaboration. The 15-story, 310,000-sf Alexandria Center will house tenants including Eli Lilly & Company, ImClone Systems, Kadmon Pharmaceuticals, and Firmenich.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center broke ground on the $30 million Truhlsen Eye Institute in Omaha in December of 2010. Housing research and clinical space for the department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, the 47,000-sf facility will feature a diagnostic imaging center and specialty clinics. Completion is expected in 2012. A planned second phase of construction will provide surgical suites.

The $700 million Singapore University of Technology and Design is slated for completion in 2013. Developed in partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the school will provide interdisciplinary education in engineering, architecture, and information systems and will support the development of new teaching paradigms. Ground was broken on the project in July of 2010.

Kemwell is partnering with Boehringer Ingelheim to construct a biopharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Bangalore, India. Ground was broken on the 15,000-sm greenfield facility in December of 2010. The cGMP plant will support process development, fermentation, purification, and formulation of biologics for early-phase preclinical and clinical studies. The project includes a fill and finish facility and suites for microbial fermentation and the production of protein therapeutics from mammalian cell cultures.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison opened the $205 million Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery in December of 2010. The 300,000-sf facility houses research offices, an atrium, and flexible dry, wet, and combination laboratories. Ground was broken on the interdisciplinary biomedical research building in May of 2008. Built with four stories above ground and one below, the project will support collaborative research in biotechnology, health science, nanotechnology, engineering, and stem cell research.

The Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (SABIC) will build the 80,000-sm Plastics Application Development Center at King Saud University in Riyadh. The project will house 150 scientists and over 300 advanced research instruments in 43,000 nsm of building space. The construction cost of the facility is estimated at SR475 million. The Plastics Application Development Center will promote the creation of new products for packaging, automotive materials, and compounding.
