Research and Development

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is providing $8 million to Argonne National Laboratory for detailed design work for a new, world-class energy research facility. This is the first step in beginning work on what is expected to be a $95 million construction project. The Energy Sciences Building (ESB) will provide an environment that will accelerate the pace of discovery by bringing together interdisciplinary teams of researchers in a space that can be adjusted to accommodate an evolving energy-related science agenda.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock is building the $37 million Nanoscale Science and Engineering Building. The three-story facility will be constructed in phases with initial occupancy in fall of 2010. The interdisciplinary research building will house technology-rich laboratories and business incubator space.

City University of New York (CUNY) broke ground on the $131 million School of Public Health at Hunter College in November of 2009. The facility will also house the Lois V. and Samuel J. The University of Cambridge opened the £10 million Alan Reece Building in November of 2009. Housing the Institute for Manufacturing, the 4,400-sm facility provides collaborative teaching and research space, an industrial design and innovation studio, and advanced manufacturing suites.

University of Rochester Medical Center is planning to initiate a $45 million expansion of the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center in spring of 2010. Adding three stories atop the existing facility, the project will provide two floors of cancer research space and one floor of inpatient cancer services.

Michigan Technological University is planning to break ground in spring of 2010 on the $25.3 million Great Lakes Research Center in Houghton. The 49,500-sf facility will house aquatic laboratories, offices, conference rooms, a hydraulics lab, coastal research instrumentation, and boathouse facilities. The Great Lakes Research Center will also provide space for collaborative research with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Research and Development Center Environmental Laboratory in Vicksburg, Miss.

Michigan State University broke ground on the $1.8 million Center for Renewable Energy Research and Technology Transfer in East Lansing in November of 2009. Providing over 6,000-sf of research space, the building will house the International Renewable Energy Technology Institute and an emissions laboratory. Completion is expected in mid-2010.

Site work has begun on Weill Cornell Medical College's $650 million Medical Research Building in New York. The 480,000-sf facility will feature a Cancer Center supporting interdisciplinary and translational research. Laboratories will occupy 13 floors of the building. Completion is expected in July of 2013.

Site work began in fall of 2009 on the Parkville Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Victoria. Delivered as a public-private partnership, the $1 billion facility will support collaborative research for the University of Melbourne, the Peter McCallum Cancer Centre, the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Melbourne Health, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, and the Royal Women’s Hospital.

Indiana University dedicated the $10 million IU Innovation Center in Bloomington in November of 2009. Providing laboratories and offices for bioscience and information technology companies, the two-story, 40,000-sf business incubator includes wet lab space. Construction began on the Innovation Center in November of 2008 and reached completion in August of 2009. LEED certification for sustainable design will be sought for the facility.

Kansas State University broke ground on the $28 million National Institute for Animal Health and Food Safety in Olathe in November of 2009. The 108,000-sf building will house classrooms, laboratories, and space for industry partners. Completion is expected in early 2011. The building is the first to be constructed on the new Olathe campus, which is part of the Kansas Bioscience Research Park.

Algoma University broke ground in November of 2009 on the $16 million Biosciences and Technology Convergence Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The 41,600-sf facility will house classrooms, labs, offices, a lecture hall, a business incubator, and space for industry partners. The building was designed by David Ellis with Mike Moore & Sons Construction performing site and foundation work. The four-story facility is slated for completion in March of 2011.

SRI International dedicated the 40,000-sf Center for Advanced Drug Research in Harrisonburg, Va., in November of 2009. Located in the Rockingham County Research and Technology Park, the project houses offices and bioscience labs arranged in clusters to maximize open space. The facility was designed by HOK and built by Nielsen Builders.

Whitworth University broke ground on a $32 million biology and chemistry building in Spokane, Wash., in November of 2009. Slated for completion in fall of 2011, the three-story, 63,000-sf facility will house laboratories, animal research facilities, instrumentation, and flexible classrooms. The building will incorporate sustainable design features such as natural lighting, geothermal heating, and an energy-efficient HVAC system.

The University of Hawaii has initiated the design phase for the $120 million Cancer Research Center of Hawaii in Kakaako. Construction is expected to begin in summer of 2010. The project manager is Kobayashi Group with Skyline Construction as designer and developer. Wilson Okamoto and Associates will provide project planning services.
