Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation has selected Granary Associates Architects to provide architectural, interior design and engineering services for a new Aquatic Center and Ambulatory Care Center. The Bacharach Institute, located adjacent to the Atlantic City Medical Center's Mainland Division on the Richard Stockton College Campus in New Jersey, houses 80 adult inpatient beds and offers comprehensive outpatient services to children and adults.

Plans recently completed for a new 23,000-sf central plant at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles are now under review by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development in Sacramento. Providing 10 megawatts of emergency power and 6,000 tons of chilled water, the underground plant will be added to the existing 4,500-ton electrical plant and will work in conjunction with it. Beginning construction in October and slated for completion in April 2003, the project is estimated to cost $22 million.

The Indiana Heart Hospital has awarded RTKL Associates Inc. the design contract for its 200,000-sf freestanding facility in Indianapolis. The specialty-care hospital will offer heart services ranging from wellness screenings to open heart surgery.

Sharp Health Care has selected Gilbane Building Company to manage a $101 million modernization program including new construction and renovations to existing buildings on the Sharp Memorial Hospital campus in San Diego.

Arizona State Civil and Behavioral Health Hospital has selected McCarthy Building Companies Inc. to lead the design-build team for its $34.5 million hospital and adolescent behavioral facility in Phoenix. With design development underway, the project is scheduled to break ground in August with completion targeted for fall 2002. The 200,000-sf juvenile complex will be finished first.

Community Medical Center in Fresno broke ground on its new Regional Medical Center on April 5th, 2001. The six-level, 340,000-sf trauma/critical care building is the centerpiece of a $250 million, multi-phase redevelopment plan designed by RTKL Associates Inc. unifying several medical institutions on a 58-acre urban medical campus. Ratcliff, architects and interior designers of Emeryville, Ca., served as the associate architect.

The La Jolla Institute of Allergy and Immunology contracted Bilbro Construction Co. for remodeling and tenant improvement of 1,500 sf in an occupied biomedical lab facility. The $250,000 project was designed by Architects Delawie Wilkes Rodriguez Barker and engineered by TKG Consulting Engineers.

A $200 million consolidation of University Medical Center (a San Joaquin Valley branch of University of California-San Francisco) and Fresno Community Medical Center is being planned and designed by Emeryville, Calif., architectural firm Ratcliff in partnership with RTKL Associates Inc. The 58-acre campus will consolidate existing facilities in the multi-phase project expected to catalyze  redevelopment of downtown Fresno.  

Kaiser Permanente is renovating its West Berkeley facility, involving relocation of a major optical facility that services all Northern California Kaiser medical offices. The $40.6 million project, designed by Ratcliff, an Emeryville, Calif., architectural firm, includes building a new parking structure, one 40,000-sf laboratory and the redesign of two additional labs. Kaiser is also plans to build a 57,300-sf million medical office building in Santa Rosa, Calif. The $10-million project will also be designed by Ratcliffe.

The Medical College of Virginia Hospital has selected Boston-based Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott working with Baskervill & Son of Richmond to design a 229,000-sf, 10-level gateway building to serve as the new "front door" for the campus. The project will create continuity between various medical specialties, enhanceing the deliveryof patient care.

McGill University Health Centre has selected Boston-based Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott (SBRA) architects working with Kurt Salmon Associates Health Care (Atlanta, Ga.) and Montreal architect Jodoin Lamarre et Pratte to complete a Strategic, Master and Functional Programming initiative to move five merged (1997) hospitals into one integrated healthcare campus, creating one of the largest hospital consolidations in North America.

University of Vermont College of Medicine and Fletcher Allen Health Care have broken ground on the Renaissance Project, a $173.4 million project uniting the two institutions in education, research, and patient care. The project includes construction of a new Education and Conference Center with a medical library, lecture hall, auditorium, classrooms, and study areas for small groups. The project will relocate outpatient specialty clinics from Fletcher Allen's University Health Campus to a new Ambulatory Care Center.

Washington University is planning to develop its Hilltop campus and School of Medicine with new buildings for education, research and patient care. The $1 billion project includes a $35 million biomedical engineering facility, the Uncas A. Whitaker Hall.

The new California Public Health Laboratory in Richmond will be one of the nation's largest public health facilities. Scheduled to open in three phases, the first 160,000-sf lab building was dedicated this week. The entire campus is estimated to be completed in 2004 and will contain 700,000-sf of labs, housing 1,300 employees. Six labs currently in Berkeley, Emeryville and Oakland will be consolidated in the new facility, providing space for research and testing of infectious, environmental, and genetic diseases.

Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center has plans for a comprehensive new cancer center. The $75 million, 257,350-sf outpatient facility will consolidate all existing oncology services. If approved, construction will soon begin on the planned four-story building, with completion estimated for summer of 2003.
