Rady Children's Hospital Attains LEED Gold for Acute Care Pavilion

Rady Children’s Hospital and Health Center was awarded LEED Gold sustainable design certification in February of 2011 for the new $260 million Acute Care Pavilion. Located in Kearney Mesa, Calif., the 279,000-sf facility was designed by Stantec and built by McCarthy. The facility provides 72 private patient rooms, 84 medical-surgical beds, 16 operating rooms, a neonatal ICU, a cancer center, and several healing gardens. The project is the first pediatric hospital in California to be LEED certified and also meets state seismic regulations.

Mercy Health System Breaks Ground on Edmond Complex

Mercy Health System broke ground in February of 2011 on an $88 million medical complex in Edmond, Okla. The three-story, 200,000-sf facility will provide clinical care, outpatient surgery, imaging, rehabilitation, cardiac care, a women’s center, and orthopedic services. Occupancy is expected in mid-2013. The project architect is Archimages Architecture & Interiors.

St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre Plans Biomedical Science Teaching Lab

St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre is planning to build a $450,000 million biomedical science teaching facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The project will house a 3,000-sf laboratory, classrooms, and biomedical training suites. The facility will provide instruction in research techniques for molecular biology, microscopy, and cell cultures.

Mount Sinai Medical Center Builds Translational Research Facility

Mount Sinai Medical Center is building the Center for Science and Medicine in New York. The 12-story, 500,000-sf facility will provide advanced research, clinical, and imaging facilities. The center will house the Translational Molecular Imaging Institute as well as linear accelerators and infusion suites. Occupancy is expected in 2012. The project construction manager is Bovis Lend Lease.

Jupiter Medical Center Expands in Florida

Jupiter Medical Center is planning a $44.2 million expansion and renovation of its Florida hospital. The design-build contractor for the project is The Haskell Company. The three-story, 75,000-sf Florence A. De George Pavilion will be built as an addition to the existing hospital, in which 50,000 sf of space will be renovated. The pavilion will house obstetrics, a neonatal ICU, 28 private patient rooms, a rehabilitation gymnasium, the 9,000-sf foot Raso Education Center. Construction will begin in fall of 2011 with completion expected in spring of 2013.

University of Houston Builds Health and Biomedical Sciences Center

The University of Houston is building the $70 million Health and Biomedical Sciences Center next to the J. Armistead College of Optometry. The six-story, 165,000-sf building will house research labs, animal facilities, a laser center, outpatient clinics, an ambulatory surgery center, classrooms, and offices. The project will enable researchers from the NIH-funded Complex Systems Supercluster to collaborate on biomedical discoveries. Completion is expected by fall of 2012.

Wyoming Medical Center is engaged in a $35 million expansion in Casper. The 97,000-sf project includes construction of a four-story patient tower and a new emergency department. The facility will provide up to 40 private patient rooms, a lobby, and a kitchen.

The hospital will provide 48 acute care inpatient beds, an emergency department, surgical suites, and outpatient care. Occupancy is expected in June of 2012. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility. The hospital was designed by Earl Swensson Associates and built by Skanska USA Building.

Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Builds Davie County Facilities

Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center will invest $85 million to build new healthcare facilities in Davie County, N.C. A three-story, 90,000-sf outpatient center will provide emergency care, diagnostic imaging, endoscopy services, and outpatient surgery. The $60 million facility is slated for completion in late 2013. A $25 million, 25-bed hospital is expected to reach completion in 2017.

Children's Hospital Plans Iowa City Tower

The University of Iowa will begin construction in late 2012 on the new $271 million Children’s Hospital in Iowa City. Consolidating pediatric medical care in a single location, the eight-story facility will include a 195-bed tower featuring larger patient rooms, play areas, and a children’s theater. Completion is expected in early 2015. The project is a part of a 10-year, $1.1 billion expansion plan.

Macquarie University Builds Australian Hearing Hub

The medical research, teaching, and training facility will house the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre, the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children, and the Shepherd Centre. Medical Center of the Americas Planned in El Paso

The Medical Center of the Americas is in the design stage in El Paso, Texas. Created by a consortium of academic and industry partners including the University of Texas and Texas Tech, the planned 140-acre biomedical research complex will support commercialization of pharmaceutical therapies. The first phase of the project will include construction of an 80,000-sf facility on 10 acres in central El Paso. A subsequent phase of construction will deliver two additional buildings at the site.

Sited adjacent to the planned hospital complex, the medical education facility will feature simulation suites for clinical training, classrooms, dedicated research space, wet labs, and an auditorium. The 450-bed Sunshine Coast University Hospital represents a partnership of the University of Queensland, the University of the Sunshine Coast, and Sunshine Coast TAFE (Technical and Further Education).

The North Tower will also house a 30-bed ICU and critical care unit and a rooftop helipad. Completion is expected in 2014.
