Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital completed the 8,700-sf Maternal-Fetal Medicine Diagnostic Treatment and Research Center (MFM) in Loma Linda, Calif., in May of 2008. Designed by gkkworks and built by Turner Construction, the project involved extensive renovations to the 11-story hospital’s third floor to create a comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and management center for high risk pregnancies.
Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University will open the $200 million Michael F. Price Center for Genetic and Translational Medicine on its Bronx campus in New York in June of 2008. The 201,000-sf, five-story facility is located in the Harold and Muriel Block Research Pavilion and houses 40 laboratories, research support space, and a 100-seat auditorium.
The Mayo Clinic dedicated the W. Hall Wendel Jr. Musculoskeletal Center in May of 2008. The 245,000-sf center houses 57 examination rooms, eight outpatient operating rooms, four image-guided injection rooms, and a rehabilitation/physical medicine center. The multidisciplinary orthopedic facility features an integrated design that allows patients to obtain imaging, consultation, and treatment in a single location. Funded by a $27.5 million gift, the facility is located on floors 14 and 15 of the $375 million, 1.5 million-sf Gonda Building in Rochester, Minn.
The University of California, San Francisco broke ground on the $254 million Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) on May 7, 2008. Located on the University’s Mission Bay campus, the 232,000-sf collaborative facility will house biomedical research laboratories and an outpatient clinic. Occupancy is slated for 2011.
Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare is planning to construct a $450 million, 259-bed replacement hospital on the campus of its outpatient center in Elmhurst, Ill. Completion is slated for 2011.
The Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute officially opened in Edmonton on May 1, 2008. The $217 million facility is Western Canada's first heart institute. Housing an MRI suite and a $1.2-million virtual-reality laboratory, the building includes 124 beds, six operating rooms, and a $2.2 million patient healing garden. The main part of the 62,000-sm hospital will open to patients in September of 2008.
Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare will open its new $89.6 million hospital in Franklin, Wis., on April 28, 2008. The five-story, 275,000-sf facility began construction in June of 2006 and houses outpatient care, surgery, an 18-room emergency department, imaging, physician offices, cardiac care, physical therapy, and a conference center. The project team includes HDR Inc. of Omaha as architect and CG Schmidt of Milwaukee as general contractor.
Houston Medical Center is constructing the 138,000-sf Northwest Patient Tower in Warner Robins, Ga. The five-story facility began construction in spring of 2007 and is being built by Gilbane Construction. The project, which features 102 spacious private patient rooms, is part of a $75 million expansion and renovation project that includes a new $14.6 million central energy plant, a $1.2 upgrade of the Houston Heart Institute, and improvements to the existing hospital. The patient tower will include OB/GYN, surgery, and intensive care.
The Stanford University School of Medicine officially broke ground on the 120,000-sf Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge in Stanford, Calif., on April 25, 2008. The technology-rich five-story facility will house the medical school’s education and training programs and is designed to foster interdisciplinary team-based learning. The Li Ka Shing Center will include the Center for Immersive and Simulation-based Learning, featuring a simulated operating room, intensive care unit, and emergency room with mannequins that both bleed and breathe.
Louisiana State University will break ground in summer of 2008 on a $28 million clinical research facility. The four-floor, 90,000-sf facility will be part of the 600,000-sf Pennington Biomedical Research Center sited on 237 acres in Baton Rouge. Upon completion of the clinical research building, construction will commence on a $12 million imaging center and a $50 million renovation of the existing clinical facility.
Michigan State University broke ground on the $90 million Secchia Center in Grand Rapids in April of 2008. Housing MSU’s College of Human Medicine, the project will support medical education and biomedical research in the areas of cancer, obesity, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and neurobiology. The 180,000-sf, seven-story facility will include teaching laboratories, classrooms, offices, and student areas. The Secchia Center is slated for occupancy in fall of 2010.
The Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital celebrated the official groundbreaking of its 22-story facility in Chicago on April 21, 2008. Slated for completion in 2012, the 1.25 million-sf pediatric hospital will include 288 single-patient rooms with a footprint of 290-sf each and 12 clinical research beds. The $850 million project will seek LEED certification for sustainable design and construction.
The $310 million Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital is under construction in West Bloomfield, Mich. Slated for completion in spring of 2009, the four-story, 733,000-sf facility will provide full medical and surgical services, as well as orthopedics, neurosurgery, women's health, cancer care, and cardiovascular services. The hospital, which will include a new emergency department, will initially be constructed with 192 beds and will expand to 300 beds as patient volume increases. All beds will be in private rooms.
Piedmont Healthcare will break ground in fall of 2008 on the $194 Piedmont Newnan Hospital in Newnan, Ga. Sited on 114 acres, the 365,000-sf replacement hospital is slated for completion in 2010. The facility will house 136 inpatient beds, including 104 medical/surgical beds, 18 critical care beds, and 14 post-partum beds. Creating an optimal healing environment with green spaces and ample natural light, the eight-story facility is designed with completely separate inpatient and outpatient care areas.
SUNY Upstate Medical University is planning $300 million in improvements to its Syracuse, N.Y. campus. Funded by $320 million from the state of New York, the university will initiate a $72 million expansion of the Institute for Human Performance, creating needed research laboratories and constructing an 85,000-sf addition. A $150 million project will build new heart and cancer centers and modernize inpatient rooms at University Hospital.
