Georgia Tech Breaks Ground on Marcus Nanotechnology Building

Georgia Tech broke ground on the Marcus Nanotechnology Building in Atlanta in August of 2006. With 20,000-sf of nanotechnology physical science and engineering space next to 10,000-sf of biomedical and biological nanotechnology space, the facility will accommodate scientists from the university system as well as the private sector. Completion is slated for summer of 2008.

University of Chicago Dedicates Center for Integrative Science

The University of Chicago dedicated its new 400,000-sf Center for Integrative Science (CIS) building in late April 2006. The facility is designed for cutting-edge interdisciplinary research in medicine and technology, much of which will be done at the nano-level, where several sciences converge. The facility will house the Institute for Biophysical Dynamics, a joint effort of the Division of Biological Sciences and the division of Physical Sciences.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Opens Molecular Foundry

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory dedicated the $85 million Molecular Foundry in Berkeley, Calif. on March 24, 2006. Construction began on the six-story, 95,000-sf nanotechnology center in December of 2003. Designed by the architectural firm SmithGroup, the facility is one of five U.S. Department of Energy nanotechnology research centers.

UC Riverside Plans New Science Building

The University of California, Riverside is planning to construct a $65.5-million interdisciplinary science building to house programs in nanotechnology, materials science, and bioengineering. If approved by the University of California, the 134,000-sf facility will be comprised of two wings connected by a lobby. The four-story east wing will house lecture halls, computer labs, offices, and six classrooms, two of which can accommodate 300 people. The three-story west wing will house research laboratories.

UAlbany Plans Nanotechnology Research Center

UAlbany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering is planning to construct the $435-million Institute for Nanoelectronic Discovery and Exploration. The project includes a new 250,000-sf facility with a 100,000-sf cleanroom to be built at the Albany Center for Excellence. The institute is being co-created by the Semiconductor Industry Association and the Semiconductor Research Corp. A second institute will be located in California's Silicon Valley.

Brookhaven National Lab Breaks Ground on Center for Functional Nanomaterials

Brookhaven National Laboratory celebrated the groundbreaking of the 94,500-sf Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) in Upton, N.Y., in October of 2005. Designed by HDR Architecture of Alexandria, Va., and constructed by E.W. Howell Co. of Woodbury, N.Y., the $81-million CFN is one of five Nanoscale Science Research Centers to be constructed at Department of Energy national laboratories. The construction cost of the facility is $38 million.

Oklahoma State University Builds Advanced Technology Research Center

Oklahoma State University will initiate construction on the 123,000-sf Helmerich Advanced Technology Research Center on its Tulsa campus in October 2005. The approximately $45-million facility will enable the university to expand its nanotechnology and sensors research, promoting the development of new materials for commercial applications. The facility will house 40 faculty and 100 graduate students. Completion is expected in fall of 2007.

University of South Florida Opens Nanotechnology Building

The University of South Florida opened its new nanotechnology building, Nanotech I, on Sept. 27, 2005. Located next to the College of Engineering on USF's Tampa campus, the $4-million facility houses over $10 million in instrumentation. The Nanomaterials and Nanomanufacturing Research Center manages the building, which accommodates the research of 35 faculty members and approximately 100 students from the College of Engineering, the Departments of Physics, Biology, Chemistry, the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Research Center, and the College of Medicine.

Simon Fraser University Builds 4D Labs

Simon Fraser University is constructing 4D Labs, a new nanotechnology research facility in Burnaby, British Columbia. The $35-million project will house analytical laboratories and cleanrooms for advanced materials and nanoscience research. 4D Labs is slated for completion in 2007.

University of Florida Constructs Nanoscience Institute

The University of Florida has awarded The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company the construction management contract for the Nanoscience Institute for Medical and Emerging Technologies (NIMET) facility in Gainesville, Fla. Designed by Chicago-based M+W Zander , the $35-million facility will include laboratories, class 100 and 1000 cleanrooms, and offices. The facility will support multidisciplinary nanoscience research in areas including electronics, biology, and mechanical systems.

University of Oregon Develops Nanoscience and Microtechnology Institute

The University of Oregon will begin construction in fall 2005 on the $8.5-million Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnology Institute (ONAMI) facility in Eugene, Ore. To be constructed entirely underground, the 19,000-sf single-floor project will be excavated, anchored to the bedrock, and then covered up again to provide maximum stability and vibrational isolation for the facility's specialized instrumentation. Other projects at the University include:

Intel Constructs Fab 32 in Chandler, Ariz.

Intel Corp. is initiating construction on the $3-billion "Fab 32" facility in Chandler Ariz. Located on Intel's Ocotillo campus, the 300-mm wafer fabrication plant will begin making microprocessors in the second half of 2007 on 45 nanometer process technology. The 1 million-sf facility will house 184,000 sf of clean room space. Additionally, Intel will invest $105 million to convert an inactive existing wafer fab in New Mexico to a temporary component test facility.

University of Notre Dame Designs Nanotechnology Facility

The University of Notre Dame has selected The S/L/A/M Collaborative of Glastonbury, Conn., to design the 27,500-sf Nanotechnology Research Building on its Notre Dame, Ind., campus. Slated for completion in April 2006, the 2-story building will include a variety of lab spaces, offices, a conference room, and storage and support space. BVH Integrated Services of Bloomfield, Conn., will provide civil, mechanical, and electrical services.

Rice University Completes Nanofabrication/Cleanroom Lab

Rice University recently completed a 3,000-sf renovation/remodeling project on its Houston campus to create the Nanofabrication/Cleanroom Lab Facility in Abercrombie Hall. Constructed by McCarthy, the new facility is comprised of Class 100 and Class 1000 cleanrooms, office, and lab support space. It will provide researchers with the clean-air environment needed to study minute mechanisms the size of only a few atoms.

Stanford University Establishes Center for Probing the Nanoscale

Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., has been awarded $7.5 million over five years from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish the Center for Probing the Nanoscale (CPN). The CPN is one of six new NSF-funded centers for the development of science and engineering at the scale of the nanometer. The CPN, a partnership between researchers at Stanford, IBM, and other companies, will occupy offices and a teaching laboratory in Stanford's Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials.
