Howard Hughes Medical Institute Opens Janelia Farms Research Campus

Published 9/5/2006

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) opened the 760,000-sf Janelia Farms Research Campus in Ashburn, Va., in September of 2006. Designed by architect Rafael Vinoly of New York City to support interdisciplinary biomedical science research, the campus has been in the planning and construction process for the last six years. Upon full occupancy in 2009, the permanent research staff will number 250 with the ability to accommodate up to 100 visiting scientists. Research in the collaborative and flexible facility will focus on the brain's information processing system and the development of technologies for creating and interpreting biological images. The project contractor was Turner Construction with Jacobs Facilities as project manager. Research Facilities Design was the laboratory building designer.

The main facility, the 1,000-sf long landscape building, features five acres of green roof and is arranged in a three-level stack that is horizontally offset to follow the slope of the site. The lowest level contains the main entrance hall, dining areas, space for social functions, and meeting rooms. The second and third levels contain long open lab bench areas, support spaces, office clusters, and a circulation corridor running the length of the building. The Janelia Farms campus includes a conference facility with 96 rooms for short-term visitors and a housing village for over 100 long-term visitors. Howard Hughes Medical Institute is headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
