Iowa State University Completes Biorenewables Complex

Published 11/24/2010

The first phase of the Biorenewables Complex was recently constructed at Iowa State University, further establishing ISU’s reputation as a leader in agricultural and engineering research. The 72,000-sf building for the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering has 24,000 sf of large, open/flexible research and teaching laboratory space for biochemistry and microbiology. The facility has been nominated for LEED Gold certification. Designed by OPN Architects with RFD (Research Facilities Design) as laboratory design consultant, the facility will eventually be part of a 210,000-sf center that will house three buildings for energy research, education, and outreach for the Biorenewables and Engineering programs. The Biorenewables Research Lab (BRL) and the Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering office wing and Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering research and teaching laboratory wing will be connected by a four-story atrium. The facilities will share research areas including harvesting vehicle design & testing, plant science, production, biochemical, and thermochemical processing and utilization.
