Binghamton University Opens Engineering & Science Building

Published 11/18/2011

Binghamton University opened the $66 million Engineering and Science Building in November of 2011. Located in Vestal, N.Y., the two-story, 125,000-sf building houses the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The facility provides flexible teaching and research labs and business incubator space for the development of industry partnerships. LEED Platinum sustainable design certification will be sought for the project, which incorporates a two-story photovoltaic wall, geothermal heating and cooling, daylighting, and heat recovery. The mechanical systems for the Engineering and Science Building are located in a separate tower to prevent vibration from traveling to the research laboratories. Supporting Binghamton's core research model, the building systems are accessible to promote collaborative teaching and research on energy engineering.
