U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Invests $4.8 Billion to Improve Health Care Infrastructure

Published 2/12/2026

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has announced that it will spend $4.8 billion in fiscal year 2026 to modernize, repair, and improve health care facilities as part of the Veterans Health Administration’s Non-Recurring Maintenance (NRM) program. Supporting one-time infrastructure projects that are not part of routine, recurring activities, the NRM enables significant maintenance, replacements, or upgrades that are needed to ensure operational capability and advance the delivery of safe and effective patient care. This historic commitment represents the largest single-year NRM investment in the VA’s history.

Elevating VA facilities across the nation, the transformative initiative includes:

  • $1 billion for maintenance and modernization of electronic health record systems, including preparation for future EHRM updates.
  • $2.8 billion to repair and upgrade outdated infrastructure systems in medical facilities.
  • $500 million for major building upgrades like elevators, electrical systems, and boiler plants.
  • $500 million to modernize medical centers for current and future care.

Specific projects will be determined on a quarterly basis, with the full list for the first quarter of FY26 totaling $468 million.
