Winnipeg Laboratories Receive Renovation Funding

The Canadian government has allocated $34.7 million to support renovations and upgrades at four federal laboratories in Winnipeg. The Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health will receive $24.2 million for facility renovations. The Freshwater Institute will receive $1 million, Health Canada’s Manitoba Regional Laboratory will receive $5.5 million, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s forensic science lab will receive $4 million. The funding is part of the Canada’s $250 million Economic Action Plan.

Mesalands Community College Builds Wind Research and Training Center

Mesalands Community College will begin construction in November of 2009 on the $7 million North American Wind Research and Training Center in Tucumari, N.M. The 26,385-sf facility was designed by Kilmer and Associates of Clovis and is slated for completion in December of 2010. The project will be comprised of a 12,697-sf wind turbine workshop and a 13,688-sf facility housing classrooms, labs, offices, and a lecture hall.

Loughborough University Opens Fitness and Health Science Building

Loughborough University opened the £8 million Clyde Williams building in May of 2009. Housing the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences (SSEHS), the facility features 27 laboratories, a large lecture hall, four teaching rooms, and two climatic chambers. The project was designed by David Morley Architects and built by GB-Building Solutions.

Medtronic Plans San Antonio Diabetes Facility

Medtronic will open the 150,000-sf Diabetes Therapy Management and Education Center in San Antonio in late summer of 2009. Medtronic will hire approximately 1,400 employees during a five-year period to staff the new facility. The LEED Silver certified building will enable the medical technology company to expand its diabetes products research and manufacturing operations.

AMD's Globalfoundries Plans Manufacturing Plant

Globalfoundries, a subsidiary of Advanced Micro Devices, will break ground in summer of 2009 on a $4.5 billion chip manufacturing plant in Malta, N.Y. The 1.3 million-sf Fab4X will be located on 223 acres in the Luther Forest Technology Park and is expected to begin production in 2012. The project will include 300,000-sf of cleanroom facilities and will employ over 1,400 people.
