Daemen College Opens Research & Information Commons

Daemen College opened the $15 million Research & Information Commons in January of 2009 in Amherst, N.Y. The 45,000-sf building is comprised of a technology-rich library and instructional facilities. Sustainable design features of the project include lighting sensors, recycled materials, and a highly reflective and emissive roof. Designed by Perry Dean Rogers Partners Architects, the facility will act as a living laboratory for research and education in environmental sustainability.

University Campus Suffolk Breaks Ground on Ipswich Expansion

University Campus Suffolk broke ground in January of 2009 on the University Quay development in Ipswich, U.K. The project includes two dormitories and an academic building housing the Faculty of Health, Wellbeing and Science; instructional facilities; a library, and a student union. The first phase of the academic building will open in September of 2010. The project team includes RMJM Architects, contractor Watkin Jones Group, and Turner and Townsend.

UC Irvine Dedicates Academic Medical Center

The University of California, Irvine will dedicate the 482,428-sf University Hospital in Orange, Calif., in March of 2009. The $393 million academic medical center provides 191 beds as well as research and training facilities for the UCI School of Medicine. Designed by HOK and Nabih Youssef & Associates Structural Engineers, the seven-story plus basement facility features private rooms; a trauma center; 13 operating rooms; adult, pediatric, and neonatal ICUs; laboratories; and a comprehensive cancer center.

Dell Children's Medical Center Attains LEED Platinum

Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas was awarded LEED Platinum certification for sustainable design in January of 2009. The $200 million facility is sited on a 32-acre brownfield site in Austin that required extensive remediation. The project features extensive daylighting, low flow water fixtures, and building materials that are locally sourced or recycled and low in volatile organic chemicals. The facility is the first hospital in the world to attain LEED Platinum certification.

University of Virginia Medical Center Builds LTACH

The University of Virginia Medical Center began construction in January of 2009 on a $22 million long-term acute care hospital Charlottesville. The 64,000-sf, 40-bed facility is slated for completion in spring of 2010 and will house patients needing care for more than 25 days.
