Virginia Tech Opens Equine Medical Center
Virginia Tech opened a new equine cell and molecular research laboratory at the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg in September of 2008. The 2,500-sf facility will support the growth of stem cells for study and clinical application as well as providing training for scientists engaged in equine and biomedical research.
Marshall University Builds Forensic Science Center
Marshall University is constructing an off-campus forensic science center in Huntington, W.V. The $4 million project will house two classrooms and a digital evidence laboratory. The three-story, 15,000-sf facility will open in August of 2009.
University of South Carolina Builds College of Business and Economics
The University of South Carolina Upstate broke ground on the $30 million George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics in Spartanburg in November of 2008. Designed by David M. Schwarz Architects with McMillan Smith & Partners as production architect, three-story, 60,000-sf facility is expected to reach completion in May of 2010. The building houses classrooms, computer labs, offices, and incubator space. The project construction manager is Linbeck.
University of Texas Dedicates National Biocontainment Laboratory
The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) dedicated the $174 million Galveston National Laboratory on November 11, 2008. The 186,267-sf facility includes flexible BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories, clinical facilities, and research support space. The building houses the Regional Center of Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Research. Project design began in September of 2003.
Torbay Hospital Builds Virtual Operating Theater
Torbay Hospital is building a £5 million education and research center in Torquay, United Kingdom. Featuring a virtual operating theater and computer simulators, the three-story project will support training in advanced surgical techniques. The facility is being built by general contractor Kier Western. Slated for completion in early 2009, the building includes a clinical learning zone with teaching facilities.
