Senate Funds Maryland Biodefense Expansions
The U.S. Senate passed the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs 2008 spending bill in September of 2007. Providing over $963 million for military facility projects in Maryland, the bill will fund a two-stage expansion of the existing U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) laboratory. The completed $1-billion facility will be comprised of 1.1 million sf and will accommodate 1,300 employees. The first phase of the project will reach completion in 2012 with the second phase culminating in 2016.
ASHRAE Publishes Energy Performance Comparison Standard
ASHRAE published ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 105-2007, Standard Methods of Measuring, Expressing and Comparing Building Energy Performance, in September of 2007. Providing a method of energy performance comparison that can be used for any building, proposed or existing, the standard also allows different methods of energy analysis to be compared. The standard will facilitate comparison, design and operation improvements, and development of building energy performance standards.
University of Tennessee Builds Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Facility
The University of Tennessee initiated construction on the $37.5 million Min Kao Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building in Knoxville in fall of 2007. The 155,000-sf state-of-the-art facility will house laboratories, classrooms, a cleanroom, and a 2,500-sf auditorium. Ground was broken on the project in May of 2007 and completion is slated for 2009. The facility was designed by Bullock, Smith & Partners with Lindsay and Maples Architects.
Weill Cornell Medical College To Establish Clinical and Translational Science Center
The NIH’s National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) has selected Weill Cornell Medical College to establish the Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC) in New York. The CTSC, a biomedical research collaboration between partnering institutions, will foster translational research on patient treatment and preventive interventions.
North Carolina Community College System Dedicates Biotech Training Center
The North Carolina Community College System dedicated the BioNetwork Capstone Center in September of 2007. The biopharmaceutical training facility is located in the 82,500-sf Golden LEAF BTEC building on NCSU’s Centennial campus in Raleigh. The BioNetwork Capstone Center will train second-year biotechnology community college students as well as providing continuing education to industry employees.
