Sanford Children's Hospital Constructs Sioux Falls Facility

Sanford Children’s Hospital will break ground on May 23, 2007 on a $36.5 million facility in Sioux Falls, S.D. The five-story hospital will house a clinic and internal employee services on the ground floor with four floors of patient and clinic space including 62 private rooms on the upper floors. A third-floor skyway will connect to the neonatal intensive care unit. Slated for completion in spring of 2009, the hospital features a medieval castle theme. Site preparation is being performed by Henry Carlson Co.

Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Develops R&D Facility

Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development initiated construction in April 2007 on a new laboratory, office, and clinical development facility in Spring House, Pa. The 150,000-sf multidisciplinary building will function as the company’s East Coast discovery research hub. Completion is expected in 2009.

Norfolk State University Dedicates McDemmond Center for Applied Research

Norfolk State University dedicated the $35 million Marie V. McDemmond Center for Applied Research in April 2007 on its Norfolk, Va., campus. The nanotechnology facility houses cleanrooms, laboratories, and offices and will be fully occupied by fall of 2007. The building is the first phase of a planned 25-acre technology project called the Research and Innovations to Support Empowerment (RISE) park.

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission Constructs Sustainable Headquarters

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is planning to develop a $128-million sustainably designed headquarters facility in an existing office building in San Francisco’s Civic Center. The project will generate 100 percent of its own energy at off-peak hours and 40 percent at peak usage times. Each year, 214,000 watts will be produced by approximately 6,500 sf of photovoltaic cells, surpassing any comparable facility in the nation. The building will also include a wastewater recycling plant.

Abbott Opens Puerto Rico Biotechnology Facility

U.S. pharmaceutical company Abbott opened the new 330,000-sf Abbott Biotechnology Limited plant in Barceloneta, Puerto Rico, in spring of 2007. Housing over 80 cell growth vessels and 12,000 liter bioreactor tanks, the $450 million plant will accommodate production of monoclonal antibodies and large scale product manufacturing. The project delivery timeline for the plant included two years of construction and two years for completion of validation and regulatory approvals.
