Canadian Federal Government Releases 2007 Research Funding

The Canadian federal government has announced the recipients of its 2007 research budget allocations. Science and technology growth will be supported by $1.3 billion in funding, including:

  • $510 million to the Canada Foundation for Innovation 
  • $350 million to Centres of Excellence in Commercialization and Research 
  • $120 million to CANARIE to develop a next-generation research broadband network 
  • $100 million to Genome Canada 
  • $10 million to the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research

Penn State Dedicates Food Science Building

Pennsylvania State University has dedicated the new Food Science Building on its University Park campus. Part of the College of Agricultural Sciences, the 126,000-sf building is located in the East Sub-campus. The $46 million project was designed by IKM Incorporated with Gilbane Building Company as program and construction manager.

Lewis & Clark Community College's Nursing Education Facility Nears Completion

Lewis & Clark Community College is constructing the $23 million Daisy and Roger P. Templin Nursing Building at the Godfrey, Ill., campus. Ground was broken on the 70,000-sf project in September of 2005 and completion is slated for August of 2007. The four-story facility will include two biology labs, two chemistry labs, six tiered classrooms, eight nursing labs, two certified nurse assistant labs, a learning assistant specialist lab, faculty offices, and a computer lab.

Scripps Develops Florida Atlantic University Campus

Scripps Florida is planning to construct its new 350,000-sf facility on the Florida Atlantic University John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter, Fla. Slated for completion in December 2008, the $18.6 million project will include three buildings. Building A will focus on chemistry, drug discovery, and translational research. Building B will focus on biotechnology, cells, genomes, and proteins, with an auditorium, cafeteria, and administrative offices. Building C will focus on biology and biomedical research.

Stockton College Breaks Ground on Student Residences

Stockton College broke ground on its $26.5-million Housing V Residential Community Commons in Pomona, N.J., in March of 2007. The project, designed by Hillier, will consist of four new dormitories. The buildings will be three stories, wood frame structures with flat roofs and will house 64 students in each building. Each suite will include four single bedrooms, a shared mini-kitchen, living room, and bathroom facilities. The project includes all underground utilities including geothermal wells.
