Department of Homeland Security Develops Atlanta Facility

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has selected Raleigh-based Highwoods Properties to build a $21.7-million, 91,000-sf office facility on two acres in Atlanta. Construction is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2006 and reach completion in the third quarter of 2007. The Department of Homeland Security will lease the facility.

Children's Hospital San Diego Constructs Acute Care Pavilion

Children's Hospital San Diego has selected McCarthy Building Companies to perform pre-construction services for its new 279,000-sf Acute Care Pavilion in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego. The $260-million Acute Care Pavilion is designed to house a surgical center, neonatal intensive care center, cancer center, conference centers, and 84 beds. The pavilion is planned for a 148,650-sf site at the southeast end of the Children's Hospital campus adjacent to the existing Rose Pavilion.

Tsinghua University Opens Advanced Environmental Science and Engineering Facility

Tsinghua University opened its $32.5-million (260 million yuan) Environmental Science and Engineering Department building in Beijing, China in summer of 2006. Designed by Italian architect Mario Cucinella, the facility features advanced energy-saving technologies including a sunshade with an intelligent control system that automatically adjusts its direction based on the sun's intensity and ceases operations when the building is unoccupied.

University of Maryland's BioPark to House State Forensic Medical Center

The State of Maryland is constructing the new State Forensic Medical Center at the University of Maryland's BioPark in Baltimore. The 120,000-sf facility will house the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and will adhere to strict biosafety laboratory criteria. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene may occupy the remaining 26,000-sf in the six-story facility. The first level of the facility will accommodate loading and parking. SUNY Upstate Medical University Plans Setnor Academic Building

SUNY Upstate Medical University is planning to construct the $10-million Setnor Academic Building on its Syracuse Campus. The five-story, 46,000-sf facility will include conference rooms, faculty offices, six reconfigurable classrooms, and the Clinical Skills Teaching Center which features 22 exam rooms and closed-circuit monitoring. The designer of the project is Holt Architects PC of Ithaca, NY. Completion is expected in 2007.
