Alta Bates Plans Oakland Hospital

Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, a Sutter Health affiliate, is planning to construct a 350-bed hospital in Oakland. With a potential construction cost of over $600 million, the facility would replace inpatient space at Alta Bates Summit Medical Centers in Berkeley and Oakland and would be constructed to meet California's state seismic safety standards that take effect in 2013. Groundbreaking is expected to commence on the facility in approximately three years.

Walt Disney Foundation Plans Presidio Museum

The Walt Disney Foundation is planning to convert a 44,000-sf brick building in San Francisco's Presidio to create a museum honoring Walt Disney. Construction is expected to begin in early 2005 with the museum opening in 2007. The museum, to be designed by Tanner Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects, will include an art gallery, an exhibit of Disney's personal items, and a research center.

Washington Hospital Initiates Fremont Expansion

Washington Hospital Healthcare System is planning a $282-million expansion and seismic retrofit of Washington Hospital in Fremont, Calif. Construction on a new power plant at the site will break ground in 2005. The initial development phase describes an expansion of the hospital's emergency department, ICU, cardiac care, and lab and radiology facilities, as well as the addition of beds and operating rooms. The cost of the hospital's comprehensive expansion plan over the next ten years is estimated at $476 million.

Nova Southeastern University Constructs Student Center

Nova Southeastern University is constructing a new $47-million student center on its Davie, Fla., campus. The multi-level, 250,000-sf facility will house a student union, a fitness center, and space for ancillary functions and support. The western half of the structure will include a hydrotherapy spa and a basketball court; the three-story eastern half will connect to the bookstore and the existing student center.

Mitre Corp. Completes Bedford Expansion

The Mitre Corp has completed the $32.8-expansion of its Bedford, Mass., campus with the completion of its new 96,000-sf office and research space. The three-story facility, built in part with grants supporting sustainable design and construction, features a solar panel array that produces 16,900 kilowatt hours annually. The project architect was Stubbins & Associates with Spaulding & Slye Colliers as developer. The Mitre Corp.
