Portland State University Constructs Northwest Center for Engineering, Science and Technology

Portland State University (PSU) is constructing the $44.5-million Northwest Center for Engineering, Science and Technology in Portland, Ore. The five-story, 130,000-sf facility will house the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science, the Intelligent Transportation Systems Laboratory, 50 new teaching and research laboratories, additional classrooms and offices, and an auditorium. CARBO Ceramics Breaks Ground on Manufacturing Plant

CARBO Ceramics , based in Irving, Texas, has broken ground on a $62-million manufacturing facility in McIntyre, Ga. The plant will have an initial annual manufacturing capacity of 250 million pounds and is expected to be operational by year-end 2005. CARBO Ceramics produces and supplies ceramic proppants which are used in the hydraulic fracturing of natural gas and oil wells.

H&R Block Initiates Construction of Kansas City Headquarters

H&R Block initiated construction on its $138-million headquarters in downtown Kansas City in October 2004. Slated for completion in late 2006, the facility will house approximately 1,500 employees currently stationed at four disparate Kansas City locations. The headquarters will feature an H&R Block tax office and an H&R Block Financial Advisors office as well as retail space. The 17-story facility will connect via a two-story glass lobby to an auditorium that will be shared by Block and the Kansas City Repertory Theatre.

Banfield Pet Hospital Breaks Ground on Portland Headquarters

Banfield, The Pet Hospital , broke ground in October 2004 on its $25-million headquarters in Portland, Ore. The 225,000-sf facility will be a two-story structure constructed over a sub-grade parking garage. Sited on 5.5 acres, the project includes plans for a two-acre off-leash dog park open to the public. Banfield's headquarters, which will replace its current facility, will house 300 employees and is slated to open in December 2005. Banfield is the nation's largest private veterinary practice with over 400 full service pet hospitals.

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Opens in Springfield

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library opened in Springfield in October of 2004. Designed by HOK, the library features a 47,000-sf Abraham Lincoln collection containing 1,500 original manuscripts by Lincoln; 12,000 books and pamphlets; 1,200 prints and photographs; paintings and sculptures; and over 200 personal and family items. The facility also houses the Illinois State Historical Society and its collections. The library is the first completed structure in a $115-million complex designed to honor Lincoln.
