Merck Opens Scolnick Research Center
Merck opened the 300,000-sf Edward M. Scolnick Research Center in Boston in early October 2004. Featuring 12 stories above ground and six stories below ground, the facility will accommodate a total of 500 employees, including 400 scientists developing treatments for obesity, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer. Sited on the Emmanuel College campus, the biomedical research center was designed by architectural and engineering firm Kling.
SUNY Albany Opens Life Sciences Research Building
The State University at Albany opened its new 194,000-sf Life Sciences Research Building in Albany, N.Y. on October 13, 2004. Sited on the uptown campus, the $78-million facility will significantly expand the space and tools available to UAlbany scientists.
Cape Fear Valley Health System Constructs Health Pavilion North
Cape Fear Valley Health System is constructing Health Pavilion North, a new outpatient center in Fayetteville , N.C. Providing outpatient diagnostic and treatment services, the facility is being developed by Cogdell Spencer Advisors in partnership with Cape Fear Valley Heath System. Ground was broken on October 13, 2004 on the two-story, 64,000-sf Health Pavilion which will provide urgent care facilities, primary care physician offices, an on-site lab, pharmacy, sleep lab, and physical and occupational therapy.
FBI Facility in Birmingham Reaches Halfway Mark
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has reached the halfway mark in the construction of its new $14-million office facility in Birmingham, Ala., on October 7, 2004. The three-story, 86,200-sf building is being constructed by Baston-Cook Co . of West Point, Ga. Baston-Cook is also the project contractor on a nearby $6.3-million facility for the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
Johns Hopkins Builds New Clinical Building
Johns Hopkins Medicine has awarded Skanska USA Building the pre-construction services assignment for the New Clinical Building project for The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. The 1.3 million-sf building will consist of a single structure with two distinct building programs - the Cardiovascular & Critical Care Tower and the Children's & Maternal Hospital. In addition, a new entry court and a below-grade parking garage will be constructed.
