U.S. Postal Service Implements Energy Efficient Building Controls
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has invested more than $18 million in energy efficiency measures at 131 of its New York facilities. With funding from the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA), the upgrades will significantly cut energy consumption, generate substantial savings, and enhance workplace productivity. ConEdison Solutions, an energy services company based in White Plains, NY, conducted a far-reaching USPS energy savings program in conjunction with NYSERDA.
Cleanroom Construction Training Center Developed at Watervliet Arsenal
M+W Zander U.S. Operations is completing the $3.5-million office and cleanroom construction training center in 60,000 sf of Building 44 at the Watervliet Arsenal in Watervliet, N.Y. A joint venture of Albany NanoTech, Arsenal Business and Technology Partnership, and M+W Zander, the center will train members of the Pipe Fitters Union, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and sheet metal workers to construct and maintain cleanroom facilities and install precision machinery.
Ohio State University Expands Cancer Hospital and Research Institute
Ohio State University is engaged in a major expansion of its cancer program that could total $400 million in construction projects over the next ten years. Doubling the capacity of the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and the Richard J. Solove Research Institute, the project will include 725,000 sf to 785,000 sf of new development and 170,000 sf to 190,000 sf of renovation on the University's Columbus campus. Site selection will occur in the next 12 to 18 months. A search for proposals from architectural, engineering, and construction management firms is under way.
Bayer Animal Health Breaks Ground on Shawnee Distribution Center
Bayer Animal Health broke ground on March 2, 2004 on a $14-million, 232,000-sf warehousing and distribution center in Shawnee, Kan. Located at the company’s 52-acre site, the facility will warehouse and distribute animal and human pharmaceuticals as well as accommodating office space for a customer call center. Project contractor Clayco of St. Louis is slated to complete construction by year-end 2004. Bayer Animal Health is a division of Bayer HealthCare LLC.
American Red Cross Relocates to Seton Industrial Park
The American Red Cross will expand with a relocation of its headquarters in June 2004 to 30,000-sf in the Seton Industrial Park in Baltimore. Housing all the chapter departments including health and safety, youth services, and emergency services, the facility will also be the home of the American Red Cross Holocaust and War Victims Tracing Center.
