Toyota Builds $140-Million Tijuana Plant

Toyota announced that it will manufacture completed Tacoma trucks as well as truck beds at its $140-million Tijuana plant currently under construction. Slated to open in 2005, the facility will have the capacity to build 20,000 trucks and 170,000 truck beds annually, and will employ 460 workers. Located on 700 acres in eastern Tijuana, the facility will be the first automobile manufacturing plant in Baja California.

University of Massachusetts Opens Alfond Management Center

The University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Isenberg School of Management (ISOM) will celebrate the grand opening of the four-floor, 47,000-sf Harold Alfond Management Center on October 11. Designed by Architectural Resources Cambridge, the $11,800,000 center is a three-story expansion of the ISOM facility and will house 4 caserooms, a financing training room with Bloomberg connectivity, computer labs, teleconferencing facilities, breakout rooms and offices. Fontaine Brothers of Springfield, Mass. was the project contractor.

Novartis Expands in Cambridge

Swiss pharmaceutical Novartis AG is renovating over 500,000-sf at the Necco (New England Confectionary Company) property in Cambridge for biotech use. Novartis plans to employs 600 technology experts, scientists and support staff at the facility. The lease is in addition to Novartis' previous Cambridge lease of 450,000 sf to house its worldwide research group.

Aircuity Building Performance Evaluation System Wins R&D Award

Aircuity, a Newton, Mass.-based manufacturer of intelligent building performance tools, was recently awarded an R&D 100 award for the Aircuity Building Performance Evaluation System. The automated monitoring system collects and interprets indoor air quality information via a user-friendly portable monitor and a secure Web-based data management system. A diagnostic program analyzes and interprets air quality data, delivering comprehensive reports on building performance.

Spinal Concepts Doubles Austin Headquarters

Medical device and spine implant company Spinal Concepts is finishing out 24,000 sf of space subleased from Sun Microsystems that will double the size of its existing Austin headquarters. Located in North Austin's Parmer Lane Business Park, the facility will provide space for expanded sales operations and product inventory. The project is slated for completion in November.
