Columbia University Designs Medical School

Columbia University is planning to build a 14-story medical school tower in New York. The facility is being designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Gensler as the architect of record. Construction is expected to begin in early 2013 and reach completion in late 2017. Featuring sculpturally exposed interiors, the facility will support collaborative, team-based learning.

Upstate University Hospital Builds Cancer Center

Upstate University Hospital is building the $75 million Upstate Cancer Center in Syracuse, N.Y. The five-story, 90,000-sf facility will provide adult and pediatric cancer care with private infusion rooms, a rooftop garden, a patient education facility, and a family resource center. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the project. The general contractor is LeChase Construction. Completion is expected in fall of 2013.

Max Planck Occupies Jupiter Campus

The Max Planck Society began occupying its new campus in Jupiter, Fla., in June of 2012. Located on six acres on the MacArthur campus of Florida Atlantic University, the 100,000-sf research facility provides 58,000 sf of lab space for wet and dry bench research, including instrumentation suites, core imaging labs, and computational space. The center also provides research and administrative offices, conference rooms, a 100-seat auditorium, and a large atrium.

Healthpoint Biotherapeutics to Create State-of-the-Art Cell Sciences Manufacturing Facility

Healthpoint Biotherapeutics will begin construction in mid-2012 on a renovation of its 80,000-sf research and manufacturing campus in Fort Worth, Texas. The new facilities will comprise 25,000 sf of advanced manufacturing infrastructure, laboratories, and clean rooms for the production of cell-based therapies. Healthpoint will invest approximately $60 million to build out and staff the research and manufacturing facility over the next few years.

Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory Opens in India

India's Defence Research and Development Organisation opened the Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL) in Bangalore in June of 2012. The advanced R&D laboratory will support biomedical engineering, human aviation engineering, and the development of military life support systems and aero-medical equipment. The facility houses a hydrostatic simulator, a dynamic test centrifuge, a high altitude simulation chamber, and a testing suite for technical textiles.
