NHS Opens Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The $850 million Queen Elizabeth Hospital opened in July of 2012 in Birmingham. Designed by BDP, the 1,213-bed facility comprises three towers and includes a new psychiatric hospital. The project was built by a joint venture of Balfour Beatty Construction and Haden Young. The facility was created by the National Health Service (NHS) and is affiliated with the University of Birmingham.

UC Berkeley Completes Energy Biosciences Building

The University of California, Berkeley will begin occupying the new Energy Biosciences Building in August of 2012. Formerly known as the Helios Energy Research Facility, the five-story, 112,800-sf project provides collaborative research space for the study of lignocellulosic biofuels. The facility houses wet laboratories for molecular and microbial biology, fermentation, and chemical separation, as well as greenhouses, warm and cold rooms, shared instrumentation space, offices, workrooms, and conference space.

CJ BIO Builds Lysine Production Plant

CJ BIO America has selected Heery International as construction management advisor for a new $320 million production plant in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The facility will manufacture lysine, an essential amino acid derived from corn, which is widely added to animal feed. When completed in 2014, the plant will have the capacity to generate 100,000 tons of lysine annually. Heery will be responsible for on-site construction management advisor services from pre-construction through completion for the 65-acre site.

Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology Completes Swanston Academic Building

Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology completed the $200 million Swanston Academic Building in July of 2012. The 370,000-sf facility provides 12 large lecture halls, 87 classrooms, 10 flexible learning spaces, a 180-seat cinema, and a dramatic central atrium. Designed by Lyons Architects, the building houses the College of Business as well as well as providing a new campus center for social interaction.

University of Rochester Constructs Media Arts & Innovation Building

The University of Rochester will begin construction in summer of 2012 on the Ronald Rettner Hall for Media Arts and Innovation. Designed by Goody Clancy, the three-story, 18,900-sf building will house an engineering fabrication lab, sound and video recording studios, a multipurpose learning suite, group study areas, and exhibit space. The $12.8 million project will include renovations to the existing Morey Hall.
