NIH Plans National Center for Advancing Translational Science
The National Institutes of Health is planning to create the National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS). The National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) will be dissolved, with $553.2 million in annual NCCR funding to be absorbed by NCATS. This includes funding for the Clinical and Translational Science Awards, Clinical Research Resources, Biotechnology Research Resources, and Research Management and Support. Under the currently proposed FY 2012 budget, NCATS will receive a total of $721.6 million.
CPSC Opens National Product Testing and Evaluation Center
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission opened the National Product Testing and Evaluation Center in June of 2011. Located in Rockville, Md., the renovated 63,000-sf facility provides 32,000 sf of laboratory space, including specialized testing chambers. The center will house 75 scientists and engineers and features an upgraded HVAC system.
Green Mountain College Contracts with UGL Services for Sustainable Facilities Services
Green Mountain College has awarded UGL Services a five-year contract to provide facilities services and grounds management and to operate GMC’s biomass power generation plant. The company is maintaining 20 buildings comprising more than 500,000 square feet of academic, administrative, athletic, and residential space, as well as 155 acres of natural and landscaped property and athletic fields.
DeSales University Breaks Ground on Gambet Center for Business and Health Care Education
DeSales University broke ground in June of 2011 on the $27 million Gambet Center for Business and Health Care Education in Center Valley, Pa. The 77,000-sf facility will house four classrooms, a seminar room, a business trading classroom, healthcare simulation suites, and a 2,000-sf medical teaching laboratory. LEED Sustainable design certification will be sought for the project. Completion is expected in May of 2013.
University of West Florida Builds College of Business Education Center
The University of West Florida is building the College of Business Education Center in Pensacola. Designed by Caldwell Associates to promote collaborative education, the $16 million, 36,000-sf facility will provide group study rooms, conference rooms, an advising center, computer labs, study lounges, and a three-story atrium. Construction began on the project in March of 2011 with completion expected in fall of 2012. A planned second phase of construction includes renovation of two existing College of Business facilities.
