Covance Opens Chandler Animal Facility
Covance celebrated the official opening of its $175 million animal research facility in Chandler, Ariz., in late March of 2009. The two-story, 288,000-sf pharmaceutical testing facility includes five laboratories, a vivarium, animal care space, and a 100-seat auditorium. Construction began on the project in June of 2007 and reached completion in May of 2008. The facility is sited on 77 acres and houses mice, rats, dogs, and monkeys. A second expansion phase is planned at the facility that could begin construction in 2011. Covance is based in Princeton, N.J.
University of Adelaide Breaks Ground on Veterinary School
The University of Adelaide broke ground on the $37 million Veterinary Science School in Roseworthy, South Australia, in March of 2009. Slated for completion in 2010, the 5,000-sm building will house teaching labs, a clinical skills lab, a pathology teaching and diagnostic suite, a distance learning suite, and a veterinary teaching hospital.
Oxford University Opens Jenner Institute Vaccine Laboratories
The University of Oxford opened the £5 million Jenner Institute Laboratories in February of 2009 in the United Kingdom. The facility features laboratories for vaccine research and development for diseases including malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, and bird flu. The Jenner Institute is a partnership between Oxford University and the Institute for Animal Health (IAH). The facility integrates basic science research in immunology and genetics with clinical vaccine development and commercialization.
Scottish Agricultural College Opens Beef Research Center
The Scottish Agricultural College opened a £1.3 million beef research center near Edinburgh in Easter Howgate in February of 2009. Funded in part by the Scottish Government, the 3,000-sm facility can house up to 500 bovines. Designed for flexibility, the building will enable researchers to alter operational layouts to study animal production, genetic improvement, behavior, welfare, and greenhouse gas reduction.
