Natural Resources Canada Builds CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory

Natural Resources Canada is building the $50 million CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory in Hamilton, Ontario. The three-story, 160,000-sf facility is located in the McMaster Innovation Park and will house high bay, mid bay, and low bay materials testing laboratories. The design architect for the CANMET complex is Diamond + Schmitt Architects with EllisDon as general contractor. Construction began on the facility in May of 2009 with substantial completion expected in October of 2010.

Bluewater Health Opens Sarnia Addition

Bluewater Health opened a 325,000-sf addition at its hospital in Sarnia, Ontario, in July of 2010. The seven-story Norman Building provides surgical suites, an emergency department, acute care, and maternal, infant and child care. Construction began on the addition in October of 2007 with construction reaching completion in April of 2010. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.

Department of Veterans Affairs Breaks Ground on New Orleans VA Hospital

The Department of Veterans Affairs broke ground on an $800 million VA hospital in New Orleans in late June of 2010. Slated for completion in 2013, the medical complex will replace facilities damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The 1.7 million-sf project will include 200 inpatient rooms, 300 exam rooms, and 20 surgical suites. The hospital will also provide emergency, rehabilitation, and mental health services.

BASF Relocates Headquarters to New Jersey

Chemical manufacturer BASF is relocating its North American headquarters to a planned $100 million office building in Florham Park, N.J. The five-story, 325,000-sf facility will be built to attain a minimum of LEED Gold sustainable design certification and will accommodate approximately 1,200 employees. Rockefeller Group Development Corp. will begin construction on the project in July of 2010 with completion expected in mid-2012.

MultiCare Health System Opens Milgard Pavilion

MultiCare Health System opened the $117 million Milgard Pavilion in late June of 2010 in Tacoma, Wash. The 194,000-sf addition includes a cancer center, a linear accelerator vault, and an emergency center with 77 patient exam and treatment rooms. The facility was designed by GBJ Architecture and built by Skanska USA. The duration of construction was three years.
