Unity Hall, Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s new five-story, 100,000-sf academic and research building, brings together faculty from robotics, data science, bioinformatics, and computational biology. Highlights of the $80 million building, which opened in January 2022, are the flexibility of the lab spaces, the varied and numerous collaboration zones and spaces, and the standardized size of faculty offices.

The University of California, Berkeley is constructing the Gateway, a visionary new home for the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society. Designed by Weiss/Manfredi and Gensler, the $650 million building will strategically collocate open lab and office neighborhoods in a continuous flow to promote cross-fertilization of ideas and insights.

The University of Texas at San Antonio opened the $91.8 million San Pedro I building in January of 2023. Designed by Jacobs and Overland Partners, the six-story, 167,000-sf structure provides the School of Data Science with 84,000 sf of classrooms, labs, and offices for the departments of computer science, computer engineering, information systems and cybersecurity, and statistics and data sciences.

The U.S. Department of Energy broke ground in October of 2022 on the $86.2 million Science and User Support Center at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y. Designed by Gensler and Burns & McDonnell, the 75,000-gsf structure will act as a welcome center and innovation hub for visiting researchers, guests, and facility users. Modern, configurable conference spaces will promote interaction among investigators as they explore interdisciplinary synergies and discover new technologies and solutions.

Wichita State University opened the $60 million Wayne and Kay Woolsey Hall in August of 2022. Designed by the architectural team of Gensler and GastingerWalker, the new home of the W. Frank Barton School of Business features flexible, technology-enabled learning environments capable of accommodating a wide range of class sizes and configurations. Illuminated by natural light, the three-story, 125,000-sf facility includes a 300-seat auditorium, collaboration spaces, business labs, faculty and staff offices, a ballroom, and a café.
