University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Completes Edinburg Medical Education Center

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has completed construction of a $54 million medical education center in Edinburg, Texas. The 88,260-gsf facility includes two buildings sited adjacent to the Edinburg Regional Academic Health Center. A three-story structure provides clinical simulation suites, digital anatomy labs, classrooms, conference rooms, and faculty offices. A freestanding single-story building houses study rooms, a student lounge, an auditorium, and a library learning center.

Mercy Health Integrates Lean Principles in Muskegon Hospital Design

Mercy Health began construction in September of 2016 on a $271 million medical center in Muskegon, Mich. Designed by HGA Architects and Engineers to increase patient care efficiencies, the nine-story, 267-bed tower will consolidate inpatient services in a single location as well as housing an emergency department, a trauma center, and surgical suites. In the design process, two-dimensional modeling of each floor progressed to architectural designs and then to full-scale models to enhance the success of lean operational strategies.

UC San Francisco Plans Weill Institute for Neurosciences

The University of California, San Francisco is planning to build the Weill Institute for Neurosciences on its Mission Bay campus. The facility will provide both research laboratories and clinical space, and is supported by a donation of $185 million by Sanford and Joan Weill. Accommodating 45 principal investigators, the collaborative project will integrate the disciplines of neurology, neuroscience, genomics, chemistry, computer science, psychiatry, and engineering.

UConn Health Opens Farmington Inpatient Tower

UConn Health opened a $326 million tower in April of 2016 at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington. The 11-story, 381,309-sf facility provides 169 private inpatient rooms as well as an emergency department, an intensive care unit, and a surgical center. Designed to promote patient privacy and prevent infection transmission, the project was constructed with leading-edge medical and operational technologies to optimize the delivery of integrated patient care.

Designed by SmithGroupJJR, the six-story, 78,000-sf facility accommodates collaborative research in the neural and behavioral sciences. The interdisciplinary project connects two existing structures and houses classrooms, laboratories, offices, study areas, interaction space, and a 170-seat auditorium.

University of Miami Health System is building the $145 million Lennar Foundation Medical Center in Coral Gables, Fla. Designed by Perkins+Will, the five-story, 206,000-sf ambulatory care facility will accommodate specialty medical clinics for the Miller School of Medicine, including the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, as well as offering outpatient surgery, urgent care, radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging, and physical therapy.

Roswell Park Cancer Institute Completes Clinical Sciences Center

Roswell Park Cancer Institute completed construction in April of 2016 on the $50.5 million Clinical Sciences Center in Buffalo, N.Y. Designed by FXFowle Architects, the 11-story, 142,000-sf project features an expanded chemotherapy clinic, a women's health center, research space, and patient care clinics. The facility also houses academic and administrative offices for physicians, researchers, and staff. The Clinical Sciences Center is located on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and was built by LeChase Construction.

Appalachian State University Plans College of Health Sciences

Appalachian State University will break ground in July of 2016 on a $70 million facility for the Beaver College of Health Sciences in Boone, N.C. Designed by LS3P, the 203,000-sf project will consolidate teaching and research space currently dispersed in seven buildings across campus. The facility will be located adjacent to the Watauga Medical Center on land donated by Appalachian Regional Healthcare System. The construction manager at risk for the project is Rodgers Builders.

Coventry University Constructs Science and Health Building

Coventry University is constructing the $52 million Science and Health Building in the United Kingdom. The five-story multidisciplinary facility will provide classrooms, simulation training suites, science labs, and core research space for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The 121,200-gsf (75,500-nsf) project is being built by BAM Construction. Completion is expected by fall of 2017.

Located at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, the five-story, 151,569-sf facility will feature flexible, technology-rich classrooms designed for ease of conversion between lecture-style instruction and team-based learning sessions. The project will also include tiered auditoriums, a variety of study areas, and a dedicated floor for simulation laboratories. Ground was broken on the project in early 2013 and completion is expected in spring of 2017.

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Expands and Renovates New Brunswick Campus

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital will begin construction in summer of 2016 on a 100,000-sf project in New Brunswick. Two new facilities totaling 50,000 sf will be constructed and 50,000 sf in the existing hospital will undergo renovation. The expansion will allow more space for emergency and intensive care as well as accommodating preoperative services. Completion is expected by summer of 2018. The project is part of a master facilities plan to strategically increase capacity on the academic medical center campus.

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Plans Surgical Pavilion

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is planning to break ground in January of 2018 on a $567 million expansion and renovation of its Washington campus. A new six-story, 477,000-sf pavilion will provide 156 private inpatient rooms, advanced imaging suites, two floors of operating rooms, and an expanded emergency department. Existing hospital facilities will also undergo renovation.
