City of New York Develops East River Science Park

The City of New York is partnering with Alexandria Real Estate Equities of Pasadena, Calif., to develop the 1.1 million-sf East River Science Park. Groundbreaking will commence in early 2007 on the $700-million mixed-use life science campus sited on 3.5 acres in Manhattan. The first 670,000-sf phase of the project will consist of two towers, the first housing laboratory, office, and conference space; the second tower will house laboratory and office space over ground-level retail.

UCSF Medical Center Designs Mission Bay Hospital Complex

The University of California San Francisco Medical Center has selected architectural firm Anshen + Allen to design its $1.3-billion Mission Bay hospital complex. The first phase of the project is slated to begin construction in 2011 and reach completion in 2014. The project will include a 70-bed cancer center, a 289-bed acute care facility, a 183-bed children’s hospital, and a 36-bed women’s facility.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Opens Harbor Campus

Dana Farber Cancer Institute has officially opened the first phase of its new Harbor Campus in Boston’s Marine Industrial Park. Sited in 50,000 sf of leased space on two floors, the facility houses administrative, laboratory, and materials management space. A second phase, currently under construction, will house a research imaging facility with two MRIs, a PET scanner, a CT scanner, and specimen freezers. The third and final project phase will commence in late 2007 and will entail the construction of research laboratories.

Medical College of Georgia Initiates $163 Million Capital Improvement Plan

Medical College of Georgia Hospitals and Clinics will spend $163 million in the next three years on capital improvements. The projects include a $23 million Comprehensive Cancer Center; an $8.3 million expansion of the Neuroscience Center of Excellence including ten universal ICU beds; $20.6 million in cardiovascular services improvements; $10.3 million in imaging equipment; a $7.8 million renovation of obstetric and gynecological facilities; $6.5 million in image storage and retrieval technology; and a $3.6 million linear accelerator for radiation therapy.

University of Kansas Medical Center Opens Lifes Sciences Innovation Center

The University of Kansas Medical Center celebrated the opening of the 205,000-sf Life Sciences Innovation Center in Kansas City in December of 2006. The five-story, $57.2-million facility was designed by Cannon Design of Grand Island, N.Y., and GLPM Architects of Lawrence, Kansas, to accommodate collaborative research in neuroscience, reproductive biology, and proteomics. The facility houses laboratories, conference rooms, and shared equipment areas to encourage team research.

Florida Atlantic University Opens Marine Science Education Building

Florida Atlantic University, in joint venture with the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, has opened the 40,000-sf Marine Science Education Building in Fort Pierce, Fla. The $11-million facility is sited near Harbor Branch’s campus and is owned by the University. The public-private partnership will provide space for biological, chemical, and marine science research in order to develop pharmaceutical products from marine organisms. The facility includes a conference area and laboratories with autoclave fermentation technology.

Stanford University Expands School of Medicine

Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., is planning a multi-building expansion of its School of Medicine comprising up to five buildings over the next fifteen years. The first $86-million facility, the Learning and Knowledge Center, is being designed by NBBJ of San Francisco. The 120,000-sf facility will connect the medical school with Stanford’s main campus and will house a biomedical library, classrooms, and hospital simulation rooms. Groundbreaking is slated for 2008.

New Jersey Consortium Plans Stem Cell Research Facility

Partnering with the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Camden, the Coriell Institute for Medical Research, and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the laboratory will be the center of a statewide network of interconnected biomedical research and collection centers.

Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre Breaks Ground on SIAM Project

Winnipeg Health Sciences Center celebrated the groundbreaking of the $35-million Siemens Institute for Advanced Medicine (SIAM) in December of 2006. The 80,000-sf research center features the new $100-million Ann Thomas Critical Services Building, a facility that will accommodate trauma operating rooms and leading-edge patient care when it opens in early 2007. The project will also include a $25-million hotel sited within the complex.

Loma Linda University Constructs Centennial Complex

Loma Linda University began construction in late 2006 on the new Centennial Complex in Loma Linda, Calif. The facility is the first academic facility to be built at the University in over 20 years and is being built by contractor McCarthy. The 148,861-sf project is comprised of a $65-million facility providing leading-edge classrooms, labs, exam rooms, faculty offices, and an amphitheater center with a 250-seat theater and a 350-seat theater for classes, seminars, and programs.

Part of the Center for Advanced Medicine, the 15,000-sf technology-rich, completely digital facility includes modalities such as MRI, CT, SPECT, PETCT, and standard radiography and ultrasound rooms.

Texas A&M Designs New Health Science Center

Texas A&M Health Science Center is planning a new Health Science Center on 200 acres in Bryan, Texas. The first phase of the master plan for the site may include three buildings at a cost of $128 million. Fifty of the acres at the Bryan campus will accommodate public/private partnerships. Slated for completion by year-end 2010, the design includes an education building with a possible nursing or pharmacy component and a simulation center allowing medical students to practice treatment on dummies.

University of Manchester Builds Biomedical Research Facility

Construction has begun at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom on a new £40 million biomedical research facility known as the Smith Extension. Designed by Wilson Mason and Partners, the 101,800-sf six-story facility will house the faculties of life science and medicine. The building is laid out around a central light well and shared laboratory facilities are located at ground level, including a freezer farm and a histology suite.

UC Irvine Constructs New Academic Medical Center

The University of California, Irvine is constructing a new 480,000-sf academic medical center at its existing medical campus in Orange, Calif. The $371-million hospital will accommodate 191 beds with space for future expansion. Designed by HOK, the seven story plus basement facility will feature 13 operating rooms; three interventional procedure rooms; laboratories; adult, pediatric, and neonatal ICUs; private patient rooms; a burn unit; and a connecting link to the existing tower structure.
