HealthSport Completes cGMP Manufacturing Facility

HealthSport’s integrated thin film production facility will open in April of 2011. Located in Oxnard, Calif., the 30,000-sf project will provide research, development, and cGMP manufacturing space for dissolvable bi-layer oral thin film products for delivery of pharmaceutical active ingredients through buccal absorption. The facility will have a production capacity of up to 480 million strips per year.

Alltech Opens Algae Fermentation Facility

Alltech opened an algae fermentation facility in March of 2011 in Winchester, Ky. A $200 million renovation project delivered a flexible facility housing biomass fermenters with a capacity of up to 265,000 liters. The building includes a pilot production plant and is designed to support rapid scale-up of new products and processes. The facility houses both mechanical agitation and bubble column fermenters. Alltech is a producer of animal feed additives from materials such as yeast, bacteria, and enzymes.

Quotient Clinical Completes Nottingham Expansion

Quotient Clinical announced the completion of a major expansion of its pharmaceutical sciences facilities in March of 2011 in Nottingham. The GMP manufacturing suite has doubled in size and now incorporates six independent manufacturing rooms supporting oral, inhaled, and parenteral drug products. The formulation development and pharmaceutical analysis laboratory areas have also been significantly increased and now occupy an 11,000-sf purpose-built facility.

University College Dublin Opens National Institute for Bioprocessing

University College Dublin opened the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training in March of 2011. The 70,000-sf facility was created in partnership with Trinity College, Dublin City University, and Sligo Institute of Technology. The center includes research space, a pilot plant, and a complete bioprocessing manufacturing operation for training programs.

Samsung Plans Seoul Biologics Facility

Samsung is planning to build a biologics manufacturing facility near Seoul in Korea. The project reflects a $266 million partnership with Quintiles to produce biosimilar versions of successful pharmaceutical treatments. Production is expected to begin in the new facility in late 2012.

United Therapeutics Expands in Research Triangle Park

Pharmaceutical manufacturer United Therapeutics is planning to build a 177,000-sf facility on its existing campus in Research Triangle Park, N.C. The addition will provide manufacturing, packaging, labeling, and warehouse space. Construction could begin in mid-2011 with completion slated for 2012. A 173,635-sf parking deck will be constructed adjacent to the facility.

AstraZeneca Plans Russian Manufacturing Facility

QualTex Laboratories Opens Norcross Testing Lab

QualTex Laboratories opened a $5.8 million blood and plasma products testing lab in late 2010 in Norcross, Georgia. The Atlanta design/build team of Lord, Aeck & Sargent and DPR Construction completed the project in 13 months. The single-story, 57,000-sf facility includes 15,500 sf of laboratory space for sample processing, testing, quality assurance, and cold storage. Designed to optimize workflow efficiency and flexibility, the project features mobile casework and overhead service panels.

EMD Serono Opens Billerica Research Facility

EMD Serono opened a $75 million pharmaceutical research and production facility in February of 2011. Located in Billerica, Mass., the 140,000-sf facility includes laboratories for chemistry, screening, biology, and cell culture. Construction began on the project in fall of 2008. The project represents an expansion of the company’s existing campus and includes offices, conference rooms, and an auditorium. Housing 200 researchers, the facility was designed by Ellenzweig with Jones Lang LaSalle as construction manager.

BIA Separations Completes Biochromatography Headquarters

BIA Separations will open its 43,000-sf biochromatography headquarters in March of 2011 in Ajdovscina, Slovenia. The manufacturing and training facility will support production of fast monolithic chromatography columns, a technology for the separation and purification of large biomolecules. The project includes a BSL-2 lab. The sustainably designed facility includes a 50kW solar power plant and geothermal heating and cooling.

DSM Builds Biologics Manufacturing Facility

DSM Pharmaceutical Products is building a $65 million biologics manufacturing facility in Brisbane. The 6,500-sf project is part of the Translational Research Institute at the Princess Alexandra Hospital campus. Completion is expected by 2013.
