Quadram Institute Opens Translational Research Facility

The Quadram Institute began the phased occupation of its £75 million translational research facility in fall of 2018. Located in the Norwich Research Park in the United Kingdom, the 150,000-sf complex was created by Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, the University of East Anglia, Quadram Institute Bioscience, and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.

Designed by The Collaborative, the 52,000-sf facility provides a 3,000-sf simulation training lab, classrooms, collaborative learning spaces, faculty offices, a multipurpose room, a gymnasium, an indoor track, and a fitness center.

West Texas A&M University Builds Veterinary Teaching and Research Facilities

West Texas A&M University will begin construction in December of 2018 on two new veterinary facilities in Canyon, Texas. The $22 million Veterinary Education, Research & Outreach Center will house three BSL-2 labs, a multipurpose teaching lab, a large partitionable classroom, offices, a student commons, and a graduate student bullpen. Offering 22,564 net assignable square feet, the building will include shell space for additional teaching, research, and instructional facilities.

Harvey Mudd College Plans McGregor Computer Science Center

Harvey Mudd College will begin construction in 2019 on the $30 million McGregor Computer Science Center. The three-story, 36,000-sf facility will provide teaching and research labs, faculty offices, clinic and project studios, robotics labs, a leading-edge AV production suite, conference rooms, and collaboration areas. The building will also include a maker space with sophisticated equipment including laser cutters and 3D printers. The repositioned Libra Complex, which currently houses engineering machine shops, will be linked to the new center.

Collocating the school's ten science departments in a single location, the 200,000-sf interdisciplinary project will accommodate programs in biology, chemistry, physics, neuroscience, psychology, geoscience, environmental science, mathematics, computer science, and health and exercise science.

AbbVie Plans South San Francisco Research Center

AbbVie signed a long-term lease in November of 2018 for 480,000 sf in the Gateway of Pacific development in South San Francisco. The facility will be located in a 12-story building currently being constructed by BioMed Realty. Gateway of Pacific is being delivered in two phases, with the first phase comprising 555,000 sf of lab, research, office, and amenity space. Completion is expected in late 2019. The second phase will provide an additional 431,000 sf of lab, office, and parking space and is slated for completion in late 2021.

University of Glasgow Constructs Research Hub

Designed by HOK, the 183,000-sf interdisciplinary project is located on the site of the former Western Infirmary and will provide flexible research labs, write-up spaces, meeting rooms, informal interaction areas, and an entrepreneurship center to promote industry partnerships.

Grand Valley State University Breaks Ground on DeVos Center for Interprofessional Health

Grand Valley State University broke ground in November of 2018 on the $70 million Daniel and Pamella DeVos Center for Interprofessional Health in Grand Rapids, Mich. Designed by FTCH, the five-story, 160,000-sf facility will provide 15 classrooms and seminar rooms, 14 interactive labs, 12 conference rooms, 22 study areas, over 80 offices, and a library. The collaborative building will feature a learning commons, advanced simulation training suites, and a virtual anatomy lab with 3D modeling and imaging capabilities.

Designed by GSG Architecture and Perkins&Will, the 153,000-sf facility will provide leading-edge research labs, imaging suites, collaboration spaces, a vivarium, a greenhouse, and a 200-seat active-learning classroom. Supporting the university's Tier-1 Engineering Initiative, the interdisciplinary project will accommodate STEM programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Located in The Navy Yard development, the two-story, 175,000-sf building houses specialized research and product development labs, collaboration areas, and offices. The structure features a two-story glass façade to maximize daylight while utilizing angled vanes to reduce glare and provide shading.

MIT Plans Schwarzman College of Computing

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is planning to build the Schwarzman College of Computing in Cambridge. Accommodating programs in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, the interdisciplinary facility is supported by $1 billion in funding, which includes an endowment for the creation of 50 new faculty positions and the development of computing resources across the university. The project is expected to provide between 150,000 and 165,000 sf of laboratory and office space to house 65 faculty members, their research groups, and affiliated staff.

University of Illinois Renovates and Expands Mechanical Engineering Building

The University of Illinois broke ground in October of 2018 on a $41 million renovation and expansion of the Mechanical Engineering Building in Urbana. The project includes construction of a five-story, 25,000-sf addition and extensive renovations of the existing 60,000-sf structure. The completed facility will offer active-learning classrooms, integrated teaching and project labs, a 3,000-sf student design center, meeting and event areas, a café, and 7,000 sf of maker space. Occupancy is expected in fall of 2021.

University of Melbourne Begins Construction on Innovation Precinct

The University of Melbourne began construction in October of 2018 on Melbourne Connect, a AUD$425 million innovation precinct. Created in partnership with a development consortium steered by Lendlease, the 800,000-sf project will include a fabrication lab, student accommodation, commercial offices, a co-working center, retail amenities, and space for Science Gallery Melbourne. Designed by Woods Bagot, the mixed-use complex will comprise five buildings connected by a 35,000-sf superfloor and a central public outdoor garden.
