Tyler Junior College completed construction of the $47.5 million Robert M. Rogers Nursing & Health Sciences Center in May of 2015. Tripling available healthcare instructional space, the 137,000-sf facility features flexible teaching labs and classrooms as well as a dental clinic and a campus health center. SmithGroupJJR provided architectural and engineering services for the facility in collaboration with Eubanks Harris Roberts Craig. HGR+Turner was the construction manager-at-risk.

Shriners Hospitals for Children broke ground in April of 2015 on the $60 million Pasadena Medical Center. Designed by CO Architects & SRG Partnership, the project includes 164,000 sf of new construction as well as demolition of existing buildings. The outpatient care facility will provide an ambulatory surgical center, clinical space, diagnostic suites, rehabilitation units, and three levels of underground parking with green roof terraces. The general contractor for the project is DPR Construction.

St. Norbert College opened the renovated and expanded Gehl-Mulva Science Center in May of 2015 in De Pere, Wis. Supporting programs in physics, math, psychology, geology, biology, and chemistry, the completed 160,000-sf facility provides 45 teaching and research labs, 10 classrooms, a large lecture hall, 15 study lounges, and 38 faculty offices. The $40 million project included a multi-level expansion of the existing structure with construction of additions at the east and west ends.

The University of Vermont Medical Center is planning to construct a $187.3 million inpatient facility on its Colchester Avenue campus in Burlington. The seven-story, 180,000-sf facility will provide 128 private rooms with natural lighting and individual bathrooms on the four upper floors, replacing existing beds in double-occupancy rooms in older buildings. Construction is slated to begin in summer of 2015 with completion in fall of 2018.

Increasing class sizes, curricular changes, and medical education mandates continue to influence the design of health science and medical education spaces, which means they must address the need for shared areas, systems-based learning and flexibility/adaptability, according to Scott Kelsey, managing principal, and Jonathan Kanda, principal, with CO Architects.

Rex Healthcare is building the $235 million Heart and Vascular Hospital in Raleigh. Located on the University of North Carolina medical campus, the eight-story, 300,000-sf tower will provide 127 inpatient rooms including an intensive care unit. Construction began on the project in September of 2014 and completion is expected in March of 2017. General contractor Skanska was awarded a $93 million contract to build the facility. Rex Hospital is part of the UNC Health Care system.

The National University of Singapore opened a 7,000-sf biosafety laboratory for the study of infectious diseases in May of 2015. The BSL-3 facility is located at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine's Centre for Translational Medicine and will support the development of new diagnostics, vaccines, and therapies.

CHI Health is partnering with Creighton University to build a $35 million academic medical center in Omaha. Ground was broken on the 80,000-sf complex in May of 2015 and completion is expected in late 2016. The project will include a freestanding emergency department as well as outpatient diagnosis and treatment facilities including space for cardiology, women's services, and psychiatry. The center is sited adjacent to Creighton University and will house the Family Medicine Residency Program.

Northwestern University broke ground on the Louis A. Simpson and Kimberly K. Querrey Biomedical Research Center in Chicago in May of 2015. Designed by Perkins+Will, the 14-story, 600,000-sf facility will support collaborative research on cancer, heart disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and genetics for the Feinberg School of Medicine. The Biomedical Research Center will house nine laboratory floors of approximately 45,000 sf each with integrated offices for principal investigators.

St. Luke's University Health Network broke ground in late April of 2015 on the $80 million St. Luke’s Hospital-Monroe Campus in Bartonsville, Pa. The four-story, 180,000-sf facility will provide 108 private inpatient rooms including 12 beds for critical care patients, operating rooms, an emergency room, a cardiac catheterization lab, a helipad, and an advanced diagnostic imaging suite. Occupancy is expected in October of 2016.

South Louisiana Community College will begin construction in summer of 2015 on a $17.1 million health and science facility in Lafayette. The three-story, 63,000-sf building will accommodate programs in nursing and allied health as well as providing space for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) classes. The project will also house administrative offices, a 250-seat auditorium, a virtual hospital, computer labs, conference rooms, and wet and dry science teaching labs. Occupancy is expected in fall of 2016.

Saint Anthony College of Nursing is moving to a new facility on the campus of Rock Valley College in Rockford, Ill. The four-story, 117,000-sf Health Science Center will provide 13 classrooms and 10 labs. Rock Valley College will occupy approximately 80,000 sf in the $32 million building and the top two floors will be leased by Saint Anthony. Construction began in June of 2015 and occupancy is expected in January of 2017.

IU Health, Indiana University, and IU Bloomington Hospital are partnering to create a new regional academic health center. Located adjacent to the IU Technology Park, the project includes construction of a replacement facility for IU Health Bloomington Hospital and an instructional building for the Indiana University School of Medicine. The regional academic health complex will promote collaboration between faculty, researchers, clinicians, medical staff, and students. Design work will begin in late spring of 2015.

Ramapo College is building the Adler Center for Nursing Excellence in Mahwah, N.J. Designed by Mitchell/Giurgola Architects, the 36,000-sf facility will feature three simulation rooms, a nursing skills lab, an anatomy and physiology lab, classrooms, and computer labs. The project is part of a $54 million renovation of Ramapo College's science center and is being built by Cambridge Construction Management to attain LEED Silver sustainable design certification.

Boston Medical Center (BMC) is responding to the changing healthcare climate with a new facilities master plan that will redesign clinical campus space and shrink total square footage in a way that reduces capital and operating expenses while improving efficiency. The plan includes a $300 million construction and renovation project that will consolidate the hospital’s two existing campuses while maintaining the same level of services. It also provides flexibility to add 1.2 million sf of space in the future, as needs arise.
