Auburn University began building the $20 million Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) in December of 2013. Located in the Auburn Research Park, the 90,400-sf facility will provide classrooms, laboratories, small group interaction areas, and a technology center. The general contractor for the project is Brasfield & Gorrie. Completion is expected by summer of 2015.
Located on the southern end of the Kaiser Permanente Fontana medical campus, the new 490,000-sf, seven-story teaching hospital and inpatient tower replaces an existing main hospital, some of which will be converted for outpatient use. With more than 500 physicians and 4,400 support staff serving more than 440,000 members, the 314-private-bed hospital includes a 28-private-bed neonatal intensive care unit and a 51-room emergency department.
The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is designing a $42 million research facility to replace a building damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008. The six-story, 93,000-sf project will provide laboratories, research support space, and mechanical areas. Construction is expected to begin by March of 2015 with completion following in summer of 2017.
Methodist Healthcare is initiating a $200 million expansion of its San Antonio campus. Adding approximately 500,000 sf to Methodist Hospital and Methodist Children's Hospital, the project involves construction of two new patient towers in the South Texas Medical Center. Over 90 percent of the facilities' inpatient space will be converted to private rooms and both emergency departments will be enlarged. Completion is expected in 2017.
Cook Children’s Medical Center will begin construction in January of 2014 on a $349 million expansion of its Fort Worth campus. The project includes construction of a six-story, 314,000-sf tower and a two-story, 16,560-sf utility plant. A cardiology center, additional exam rooms, and lab space will be built. Cook's existing facility will also be renovated; the emergency department will be expanded and surgical suites will be enlarged and upgraded.
Trident Technical College will open a 90,000-sf science and nursing building in January of 2014 in North Charleston, S.C. The $30 million facility will feature a 291-seat tiered lecture hall that can be divided into smaller instructional spaces, as well as teaching labs, classrooms, a clinical simulation suite, and a nursing resource center. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the building. The project team included design architect LS3P Associates and general contractor China Construction America.
University Hospital of Northern B.C. broke ground in December of 2013 on the Northern Health Learning and Development Centre in Prince George. Developed in partnership with the Province of British Columbia, the University of Northern British Columbia, and the University of British Columbia, the $10 million project will provide a clinical simulation center, seminar rooms, a library, and video conferencing suites for advanced medical instruction and training.
Genesis Medical Center is initiating a $138.5 million expansion of its East Rusholme campus in Davenport, Iowa. Comprising 203,000 sf of new construction and 115,000 sf of renovation, the project will consolidate services from Genesis' two area campuses to support the dynamic collocation of healthcare teams to optimize patient care. A seven-story tower will be constructed, providing 64 patient rooms, 12 surgical suites, and an expanded emergency department. The duration of construction will be four years.
The new Health and Life Sciences Center at Elgin Community College, with more than 137,000 sf of classroom and lab spaces on three floors, brings together all 12 health professions programs in one building serving 1,800 students. The Center offers real-world, hands-on, experiential learning opportunities for students in nursing; radiology; dental assistance; histology; surg-tech; and massage, occupational, and physical therapies, as well as classrooms for core academic coursework.
Trios Health is building the $112 million Southridge Hospital in Kennewick, Wash. Designed by PKA Architects of Portland, the four-story, 168,000-sf facility will feature a daylight basement with a restaurant, 74 beds in 300-sf private rooms, 14 intensive care beds, and 27 trauma and emergency rooms. The hospital will also provide an advanced imaging suite and six 640-sf operating rooms. C.D. Smith Construction began building the sustainably designed facility in 2012 and occupancy is expected in late spring of 2014.
Dalhousie University will begin building a $35 million collaborative health education building in Halifax in March of 2014. The five-story, 106,000-sf facility will provide active-learning classrooms, a clinical skills simulation suite, seminar rooms, and a learning commons. The project team includes Barrie & Langille Architects of Halifax, Moriyama & Teshima Architects of Toronto, and MHPM Project Managers.
Stony Brook University broke ground on the $194 million Medical and Research Translation (MART) building in November of 2013. The eight-story, 250,000-sf facility will accommodate up to 250 faculty members working in collaboration with physicians and medical professionals to develop advanced cancer treatments and medical imaging technologies. MART will provide 25 cancer biology labs, a 30-room cancer clinic, a 30-station clinical infusion center, a 300-seat auditorium, 12 classrooms, and conference rooms.
MaineGeneral Medical Center opened the $312 million Alfond Center for Health in November of 2013 in Augusta. Featuring entirely private rooms, the 640,000-sf, 192-bed hospital provides spacious surgical suites, procedure rooms, an emergency department, a cardiac catheterization lab, an education and conference center, a helipad, outpatient clinics, and inpatient rooms. The facility has separate public and patient transport corridors. Construction began on the project in August of 2011.
Columbia University Medical Center will begin construction in late 2014 on a new School of Nursing facility. The seven-story, 68,000-sf facility will provide advanced, flexible learning spaces, research suites, an atrium lobby, and event areas. Designed by a joint venture of CO Architects and FXFOWLE Architects, the project will feature a two-floor simulation training center with three clinical teaching skills labs housing 14 exam tables with mannequins and six beds.
White Plains Hospital is expanding and renovating its New York campus. Phase Two of the hospital's $108 million capital transformation campaign began in October of 2013. Designed by Perkins Eastman, the project will provide a six-story patient care building with two medical/surgical floors and 24 private patient rooms; a five-room surgical suite; an expanded radiology department; and a front entrance and lobby. Phase Two comprises 42,000 sf of new construction and 22,000 sf of renovation. Completion is expected in 2015.
